Flint Knives

You can buy flint and obsidian online relatively cheaply. Can't post the links due to forum rules, but if you did a websearch, you will be able to find flintknapping suppliers. Here's about 13lbs for $49 online.

Only other way of getting large amounts of obsidian is if you lived next to a volcano, Hawaii and Mexico are the closest in N. America.

Unless I am mistaken, the stuff is all over California. There are volcanos in Oregon too.

well, d-bob beat me to it.

Also, are you sure about HI? I have never found or heard of obsidian there. I know they have some nasty glass lava, but it is extremely bubbly.

Of course I would get an infraction for defending my own thread. Adios, bladeforums, hey everyone I wouldn't say much in these threads, or you'll get insulted by mods and other members, infractions for no good reason..Told them to take their garbage to Whine&Cheese and I get sent there instead. Thing is ...the same people that harassed me before are doing it again, coming to my threads, antagonizing me, provoking me and I'm the one that gets in trouble. Well let me say I have truly enjoyed your wisdom and info I have recieved on here....and I wish a select few of you all the best, you know who you are. Please Mr. Bastid when you read this , or whoever runs the show here, cancel my membership, keep the 25 dollars, n buy yourself a cheeseburger! C'est la vie!

Well, there's always Oregon and California. Both have large deposits of obsidian.

Guess I left out some places. Just trying to make a quick comment to get him started.

Also left out WA, but it also depends on the type of volcano as not all volcanoes produce usable obsidian.

I have always wanted to know the difference between different colors of obsidian -if any at all. Surely there is some difference in how it is made or where, but what about performance?

True about obsidian. Volcanic glass can be knapped to about one molecule thickness at the edge. Nothing man-made comes close.

Obsidian is very available here in Oregon. I just read in a traditional archery magazine that the 1 molocule thickness that obsidian can be knapped to is sharp enough to cut a CELL in half.

Obessed, I'm sure there is no reason to be that butt hurt. I didn't read the thread you were picked on in, and I'm not sure why you got a warning, but you could thicken your skin up a little and just move on. This board has the best info around for knife making.

You apparently haven't seen the entire thread dedicated to slamming me. Last time I was there the replies were 25 pages long. Sorry I don't much want to take that garbage. If that makes me a wuss, then so be it, I'll be a wuss. And I did move on, and they came into my threads saying more junk about me. I moved on , they didn't.

Does anyone know off the top where obsidian is commonly found in California? I recall reading, maybe a post here, about an area folks were driving to and collecting it along the roadside but can't remember if it was California.

If you are unable to follow clear warning to keep W&C out of the general discussion forums that is not my problem.

Infraction issued.

Care to continue.

It seems to be found in any area where I'm not.:D Apparently, Lassen National park has tons of the stuff all over.

You might try looking at this: http://www.sourcecatalog.com/ca/s_ca.html to get a good idea of where to find it.

Ya know what? You don't like my threads stay off of em, it's quite simple. You and the jerks that grilled me before on that dumb Whine&Cheese or whatever keep visiting my threads...Don't like me, stay the heck out man. What's difficult about that?

I HAD nothing against you, my point was it's worthwhile to do a quick search about a topic before you start a new thread. It's what I tell anyone that makes a post nearly identical to one I know has been floating around recently. No need to get angry about it or insinuate it was an attack.

Cheers

Perfect, first location on the list is Annadel State Park about an hour drive. Never visited but been past and around it a bunch of times. I'll have to make a point to check it out.

Thanks!

I should be checking some of those places, too, but I just blew a head gasket, so it'll be awhile before I can drive anywhere.

When I was a lad, my grandfather had chunks of the stuff (don't know where he got it) lining his walk: wish I had some of that now.

In central Ohio there is a place called "Flint Ridge" where the local Indians mined a very high quality flint. Every year there is a "knapp in" where people from all over come to Flint Ridge to knapp flint and sell arrowheads. I was there this year and saw some incredible arrow & spear points.

The volcanic range immediately south of Mono Lake has lots of obsidian laying around. You can collect a truckload if you want to. From 395 between Mono Lake and June Lake, take roads (paved or dirt) to the east and look around. There is also a lot of pumice there, as well as the only operating pumice mine in the US.

there is a spot south of mono lake on the western side of Route 395 that is a whole hill of obsidian, the road to it is actually named "glass flow road"

Edged, I would seriously reconsider leaving here. It's a great place once you learn the ropes. I got an earful when I first joined, but once you settle into the flow of things here you'll learn to love the people. You'll start to learn the Dao and once you've lurked enough to understand the community, you can work your way into it. There's no reason to get so bent out of shape.

Cutting a cell?! That's insane, and I thought hair whittling was cool. Cell whittling is the next step for me! :D

I don't recall where in CA that it occurs naturally, but I do remember somebody in my neighborhood used to have a huge piece of it in their front yard (picture a 50 lb. pumpkin for size ref.) when we were kids and we used to sneak over there in the evening or early morning with a hammer and screwdriver to chisel chunks of it off so that we could try to make our own arrow and spearheads:D

If anyone gets a chance to go up the 395 to around Mono lake, make sure and stop by Eric Schat's bakery in Bishop. You wont regret it if you like your bread. Their bread is amazing.
