Firesteels normally comes with a striker.. i wonder, why do most bushcrafters still prefer to use the spine of their knives??

I've actually tried this . If the spine of your knife has a good sharp edge then because you have a much better grip on a knife than the little striker you can scrape the firesteel harder with the knife and it will throw a much larger shower of sparks . This means in less than ideal conditions you'll have a better chance of getting your fire started .

oh.. to where iam from... they are always attached to each other...

atleast thats what i see..

personally i always rather use the striker...

As much as possible I dont want to expose my knife to others...

thats just me..

What? You are starting a fire using a shower of sparks in front of people that you don't want to expose to your knife?

Maybe the Bic would be your better bet!

I have one of those spring loaded strikey things with the steel in the middle of a plastic housing. Press n' push. I use it to light the grill and scare the cat.

Snippy..

on camping trips my group usually mingle with other hikers... i simply choose to keep my knife hidden as much as possible from others... for security purposes..

So where would a badasslibrarian have to live that it could actually be a problem if someone saw you using a knife when you're out camping  Because I've done ALOT of camping in my time and had knives of all sizes and axes out using them and no one thinks anything of it , because I'm camping and that's what you do when you're camping .

So their knives can finally provide some utility? Maybe they don't know about bic lighter technology or buttons for shirts?

HaHa!---also if they said anything about my knife I would just tell them it cuts a lot better than the .44 magnum or 1911 I had on!:D

Prpbably it is the same reason why I don't open a beer bottle with a bottle opener but with the spine of my knive.
Of course I always have a bottle opener with me on the victorinox but it simply is much more pleasure to use the spine of a fixed blade .. :)

PS: The beer even tastes better then .. :P

Back to the original point, I suppose if one has an 8 tool rule like you claim to have, then carrying a doohickey around that only serves one function is fine.

To me, having the creativity and skill set that allows one to carry as FEW tools as possible is the essence of bushcraft .

What I would ad is the firesteel that comes with most less expensive fero rods are garbage. I usually buy the coghlan's steels cause they work great, the handle doesn't pop off, and they're cheap enough I can staff them in multiple bags and cars... and the steel they come with is junk. The 90 degree spin on my fallkniven f1 rains sparks like the end of days.
