Flint striker vs. knife

Well I do both. I took the striker off my LMF Army ferro rod and carry it in a loop on the sheath of my F1. Use the spine of my knife to strike that on. Also its my most used rod.

My other ferro rod is a Nano Striker on my key ring. Since the actual striker is part of the package I just use it. I don't use this one all that much, just if I head out without my F1.

I don't use the striker because they're usually too small and they tend to get hot after 5-6 strikes. The knife is more comfortable and I could use it with gloves.

I live in the Philippines... where insurgencies are almost everywhere... NPA's (National peoples army, Abusayaf, etc)... during hikes, it is an unwritten code for us to always maintain a grayman status.. never flaunt what you have unless really necessary...

Guys im not totally ditching the possibility of using the knife as a striker... if my striker got separated with my flint ... then i need to use it... if someone will give me some ferro blanks.. i would gladly accept it .. but will only use it as a last resort option...

badasslibrarian I understand what you're situation is now . I can't even imagine the dangers you could face if something you where doing was misunderstood . You are completely right about keeping your knife concealed unless absolutely needed .

HaHa!---also if they said anything about my knife I would just tell them it cuts a lot better than the .44 magnum or 1911 I had on!:D

LOL. That sounds like something I'd say.

As per the op, I like to use my knife for alot of reasons:
1) I like to use my knife :)
2) The crappy strikers that come with most firesteels are hard to grasp properly.
3) My edc/camping/survival knife is a carbon steel fixed blade. Most of the strikers
that come with firesteels are stainless. Carbon steel throws MUCH better sparks
in my experiance.
4) I'm not a weight wenie but I guess it does reduce bulk and wieght.

ymmv.

NPA was very active when I was stationed there over 20 years ago. Seemed like the base would get locked down every few months or so due to them killing a Marine or Sailor and floating them down Olongapo river.

Bic lighter because when your cold and wet looking cool goes out the window. You can get them in Orange there light you can keep in plastic so they don't get wet o ya and they make Fire on command without scuffing your knife. Really I don't get the steel thing at all. I have one on me every day and I don't smoke there in the truck the house survival kits all my backpacks. There cheap compared to a steel o and another thing they come with flint and strike included. Ya they don't look so cool in a loop on your sheath.

they are just out there... waiting ... planning ...

aside from bad elements we also have an obsolete knife law:

BATAS PAMBANSA Blg. 6 November 21, 1978

AN ACT REDUCING THE PENALTY FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF BLADED, POINTED OR BLUNT WEAPONS, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES, AMENDING FOR THE PURPOSE PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NUMBERED NINE.

Section 1. Paragraph three of Presidential Decree Numbered Nine is hereby amended to read as follows:

"3. It is unlawful to carry outside of one's residence any bladed, pointed or blunt weapon such as "knife", "spear", "pana", "dagger", "bolo", "barong", "kris", or "chako", except where such articles are being used as necessary tools or implements to earn a livelihood or in pursuit of a lawful activity. Any person found guilty thereof shall suffer the penalty of imprisonment of not less than one month nor more than one year or a fine of not less than Two Hundred Pesos nor more than Two Thousand Pesos, or both such imprisonment and fine as the Court may direct."

;D

This thread is a goofy as threads get.

If you feel you can't expose a knife while in the woods because of security reasons, get out of the woods.

If you feel you can't expose a knife because of legal reasons, don't be so stupid to post about doing so on the net.

My UST strikeforce firestarter.

Moded with some duct tape. Inside the tinder compartment i have one wetfire cube and a cutter blade.

For me the striker is very effective ...

I have used my knives, but if you don't have a really sharp edge to the spine, they are a poor option. Light weight and basically free and better than any commercial striker or knife I have ever used is a couple inch section of a worn out old hacksaw blade.
