Recommendation? Flipper recommendation?

Thanks, I might go for the ZT 0452CF

I have a ZT 0450CF, the 0562Ti, the 0562CF, and the 0770CF, and the 0562 Ti is my favorite ZT, followed closely by the slimmer 0450CF if the 0562 is too big. The O562CF is too close to the Ti model without actually being better, unless you get aftermarket contoured marbled carbon fiber scales like mine.

My 0562Ti feels very much like my Hinderer XM-18, but with a little better detent and the opening action is snappier. The Hinderer feels a little more sturdy and good for hard use with the thicker blade stock, and I like that there are so many different XM-18 scales to choose from out there if you want to personalize it, vs the 0562CF model. With XM-18 you can go full Ti, G10, Micarta, glow in the dark, CF, etc...

The Protech Malibu is also a very good flipper (I have a black one and a blue one) and it's also a bit cheaper than the ZT knives, or Hinderer Knives. It doesn't feel as heavy duty as the 0562 or XM-18, but feels about like the 0450 but with the bonus of being a button lock. in the winter I get cracked skin on my thumbs, and it makes it harder to unlock a frame-lock knife. You could get three of these in your budget.

I am happy with a good number of WE, Civivi, and Sencut flippers, all for a very good price vs your budget, so you could get multiples. I have not had a bad one yet. The WE Kitefin in full Ti is a very good sub-$200 flipper that looks and feels like a knife that could cost double.

Of course there will be a boat-load of great flippers out there that people here will recommend here, and if you listen to all of us, like I did, then you will have 200+ knives in no time flat!

Thanks for the great leads. I'm a newbie to flippers, and I see there are a lot of factors to consider. I'm trying to see if I actually like the flipping style - after purchasing a recent flipper with a very resistant detent, I never want to repeat that experience. If I end up liking them, I will probably go a little crazy like you did!

Funny, I'd just ordered it retail.... Thanks. The contour and ergos look good, and it seems to do well in Youtube-review-world....

I think you will really like it - I got mine maybe 2 weeks ago. I think that my 0450CF is basically the same, but mine is blacked DLC Ti frame and DLC S35VN blade. It's real full thickness carbon fiber, not CF/G10 as well. It has a great action, and is not a dud like what you described about a different knife. I'll probably look for an upgraded Ti pocket clip though.

For a first flipper tou can find some very good options by looking at ZT and We knives
The ZT 0562 and 0450 are good picks, however IMO they are not the best slicers you can get.
The WE Beacon was very good too and it carries like nothing because of how slim it is

My favorite brands for flippers are Hinderer and Koenig but may not qualify to you because of the thumb studs/blade stops and hole in the blade
They are excellent
You can still give a look to the Koenig mini goblin that is a pure flipper

I have been very impress by the action of the les George VECP flipper

Even though I am not a fan of the construction of Reate knives I think they are excellent and you can try anything from them
Made by Reate the Peña X-series have excellent action

Look at cherbukov. I like they plain design and the action is great

Finally the malibu is a good flipper but not the crispiest I have. However is you like it, just go for this one, we know how it works… if you done get it you will get another one and then you will get the malibu 🤣

The Cherbukov does look good! What kind of bearings does he use?

I completely forgot about Shirogorov - my Neon NL is a great flipper without thumb studs, but $550 not $240. It’s about 3.25” blade and the other models like Quantum Ursus and F3 or F95 are 3.75” but in the $650-$900 range.

My Strizh uses steel bearings in a phosphor bronze cage. Granted, it's a front flipper that also has a thumbstub, but the action is fantastic.

If you are looking to explore flippers, do it on the budget end. You can try different things and see how you like them for a fraction of your max budget here. It sounds like you've got a good budget button lock on the way. I'd also recommend trying a few liner or frame locks. There is a certain magic that happens with a crisp detent, a nice tab with good geometry, and smooth bearings. I also like how different flippers feel different.

The fit, finish, and overall quality available from some brands in the budget realm now is outstanding. So the ones you try here can still be good users in the long term. Civivi is a great place to start. You might also look at the offerings from their parent company, WE Knives. Also be sure to check out Kizer. The Kizer Gemini, designed by Ray Laconico, is one of my all-time favorite small-medium folders and it has a nice snappy action. There are several variants available. This one is a dealer-exclusive but it might be my favorite of the sub-$100 versions.

Thanks so much! I’m really liking the CIVIVI Cogent that just arrived. Great ergos, balance and action. And a kind of badass look. Pics later. Needs some edge work, but I’m very happy with it! Will look at WE as well.

The Zero tolerance 0462 would be another good recommendation if you like pointy blades, there are a few variants but I like this one the most:

It's too bad that ZT doesn't make the Les George collabs anymore. The 900 series were great blades. Rugged and fit for use yet slicey and handsome. The 0909, 0900, 920 are criminally underrated.

It looks like George isn't taking on work right now, but you could easily get one of his midtech pieces well below the your budget of $800 if you stumbled across one at a show.

At least the 920 is still available in Germany. Some web shops still have them in stock for sub 300$

Malibu is my favorite flipper only knife. Button lock on them is flawless in my opinion.
