Flitz- no match for Sharpfinger!

Recently I have been carrying and using my old Schrade Sharpfinger again. No doubt thanks in part to our own Normark (Eric Noeldechen) from On Scene Tactical, www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel, for his multi position concealex sheath. Very well made and easy to use.

I noticed that the carbon steel Sharpfinger stained quite easily as in the past. But got quite worse when I tried it on foodstuff for the first time. I used it on charred steaks and apples. The blade characteristically turned dark brown. And tasted that way too! So I took it to a good buffing with Flitz metal polish. In no time it was cleaned to the bare metal. Flitz truly works wonders as it has always been a favorite polishing medium on my list for firearms and cutlery maintenance.

But I was aghast to discover that as soon as I used it on my next steak, it had turned brown quite quickly again! I am quite aware that plain jane carbon steels do stain rather easily but not to this degree. Flitz have always been top notch in its preserving qualities but I guess it is no match for the Sharpfinger!

PS- looking for the Schrade + steel version with the staglon handles. Anyone have one they don' t want to cut steaks with anymore??

I have one but I'm hanging on to mine. I believe it's called the Wolverine. I'm not sure but I think they are still produced. Could be wrong though.

You could float the question over on the Schrade forum.

Both knives are great! I really need to get a kydex from Eric though.

Nakano, my advice is to give up & simply enjoy the patina. I used to go through a weekly polishing session with Simichrome on the 1095 of my skeleton handle Perrin La Griffe (worn as a NK next to my skin). I don't mind maintaining my tools but it got to be a bit too much. I soaked it in lemon & then lime juice to give it a start & now I just make sure to give it a regular wipe down with Tuf-Cloth.

Yeah, the Wolverine is still available. But I thought someone may want to let one go for a trade. But after my story Hoodoo, I can see why you want to hold on to yours! Or do you?? Have a few to trade...

As for the appearance of the discoloring, I could live with that but not the taste! Brian , are you saying that it needs a few "coats" of discoloring before the taste disappears?

I've never used the La Griffe for food, Nakano, so I can't say if it imparts a taste or not. I was just thinking of appearances.

Could this be a hint that rare steaks are better for our cutlery?
