Wow. I just posted this exact thread...I should have looked first, but what are the chances of two people having the exact same thought? (Apparently pretty good).

My theory is that for almost any [cool] notion you can come up with, there's already a whole group of people in some corner of the internet who have tested and debated which, why and how the best are are best, and who own the 'guide model' - which likely costs 10x to 100x more than I would ever be able to spend. This goes to a myriad of things, from bows to tablesaws, from canoes to sunglasses, and probably goes double for flashlights, knives or shooters: any boy-toys
