Floating one's boat...

I had a couple Swamp Rat knives a year or two ago, with the Resiprene C handles, and they didn't really float my boat, so I let them go. As Guyon wrote this morning in his Dumpster Mutt LE sale thread, it didn't float his boat. Everyone's boat is different, and what it takes to float it apparently differs from person to person.

Anyway, what does float my boat is the latest Swamp Rat knife I bought, specifically a Ratweiler Chopper with Sage blade and Tan Canvas Micarta handles. For some reason it reminds me of my SFNOs for its utility factor. Not too small and not too big. Good thing that I have a second one on the way, with Green blade and Black Canvas Micarta handles.:thumbup:

I debated the new Ratweiler for a bit... decided to pass because I have plenty of INFI in it's size. But... As usual, I'm thinking that I should have picked a couple of these up... now that they're gone of course. :o

Yeah, that DM is a nice little knife and very well ground, but it just didn't push my buttons. I tried a CG version and tried very hard to like it. Finally sold it. Now I have an LE, and it's for sale. Something to do with the size of the Res C relative to the knife and my fairly large hands. They're not KAAK-like, but I do have pretty long fingers. Feel is such a subjective thing.

I've had other knives that I've worked at liking, only to finally give up. Guess I should know by now that, if the initial wow factor doesn't come right away, it ain't ever gonna' come. That might be a good question for this thread: What knives did you try hard to like, only to finally let them go?

As for the Chopweiler, I think I may have to spring for one of the newer models, even though I already have an old-school Ratweiler. Am hoping to see a few more Swamp Wardens over there pretty soon as well.

I'm trying really, really hard to warm up to the FBM Proto's but am not having much success.
They just seem to big and heavy and I really do not like G10.

Now what does float my boat is SHBA's & SHSH's and especially this one.

I tried very hard to like the first DM, and now I am trying hard to like the DM LE. Having had both, I am actually leaning towards the regular DM, but it still isn't floating my boat yet. I have a Swamp Rat and a couple of Fehrmans in that size that I like more...

Dang it Dave! Where did you get that one? I love it!!!

I'm a clip point fan, so the old RWs float my boat better than the new ones. But Lunde is right about the RW being a classic all-arounder. I used mine (used to be Jur's) last night to split some wood for the fire pit. It's not INFI, but boy is it a great sized blade

Can you expand on this a little? What about the Res-C handle doesn't feel right for you? Is it subjectively too big or too small for you?

I haven't gotten mine yet so I have to live vicariously through others for now.

I'm sorry Dave.... but that thing is just butt ugly!!! :D :D You need to send it to me and save yourself the embarrassment of owning it. :p :p

Oh... as for the rest of you... this one is mine if Dave ever parts with it. ;)

I can tell you who DOES like big, heavy, G-10 protos......

Me! :D

Actually, the old school Ratweiler is one of my biggest "love/hate" knives. I like the size and feel (right between a Camp Tramp and my FSH) but the hump in the handle just doesn't let it sit quite right in my hand.

If I can pick up a cheap user some day I might try an adventure in grinding (eek!), but right now I only have a 1-of-8 Urban Camo and another regular one that is one of the mintiest Swamp Rats I've ever seen.

Has anyone been able to compare the new and the old yet?
