Well, here I am in FT. Lauderdale with a pocket full of cash and with the intention of FINALLY buying my FIRST real custom. Thanks to you fine folks, who for the past six Months have taught me the basics of knife collecting and some of the very complex sciences about steel, bolsters, grinds, and all the stuff a NEWBIE better know if he expects to lay down a few grand for that knife that will establish the beginning of a REAL knife collection to pass on to my two Son's. I asked you wonderful "guys" for advice and off I ran to Guns and Knives in FT. Lauderdale. Man I saw cases and cases of every knife I could ever dream of. You name the make, they had an example. The One of a kinds, the "art knives", the serial number 001, the finests of the finest. BUT WHERE THE HELL ARE THE AUTO'S?????? I am here DAMNIT to buy auto knives. Go ahead and rag me, but I jumped into knife collecting with both feet and I am a pure knifeknut forever, but I am into AUTO's. NOPE, not a one. Sorry, Sir but because of the Circut Court decision, that $3500 Japaneese "art knife" the finest auto I could sell you, I CANNOT. I have no autos in this building, if I did I would loose my FFL, I would be shut down, and Hell I have already lost tens of thousands of dollars in wholesales of all my autos because" of some STUPID, beyond my 24 years in Law Enforcement mentality will allow me to comprehend. I stood there talking to "Guy" the manager, Howard's daughter and a retired Doctor as we discussed how many people HIS profession killed. I could buy a Sabre and walk into the Sunrise Mall, but no Auto's. So, FLORIDA STINKS!!!!! Sure lets gamble, I take a chance and lay down three grand and try to get it out of florida. If it gets scooped, I am out a knife and the cash. I get it back to New England, I got me my knife, BUT, BUT, BUT, who loses????SH*T, I am no rich man, I am in Police work. I have saved for years. I am gonna risk my awesome one of a kind ending up in one of my "Brothers" in Law Enforcement's house instead of mine????? This is sad, stupid silly and when are you FLORIDA knife DEALERS gonna join together and overturn this &*$%$%$$%%% RULING????I am in tears......wolf:mad:   :barf: :(

Wolfmann, calm down, it could be worse, you could be in NJ where they'd laugh you out of the store.
Seriously, visit the website of some of the great dealers that post here and you can find all the autos you want.
Guys like Les Robertson,Triple Aught,Edge Equipment,Bladeart, etc. all carry quality lines of what you're looking for and maybe at a better price than a brick and mortar store.

Wolfman

In Florida one can legally own and possess (with the correct paperwork) Submachine guns, Suppressors, Machine guns, Rifles, Pistols, Hand Grenades, Pre-Ban Standard Capacity Magazines, Tanks, Anti Tank Rifles, Short Barreled Rifles, Short Barreled Shotguns, Mortars, Cannons, ect, ect. You can get a Concealed Weapons permit with zero trouble. They issue CCWs to non residents. They recognize carry permits from like Sixteen States.

But for some damn reason, the State Attorneys Office has seen fit to go out of it's way to save the population from Evil Auto Knives.

Your right, it's BS.

Thanks Guys, I am breathing again, sitting here enjoying the tropical weather!!!!! But Frankly, having done ALL my knife collecting by computer and NEVER yet been to a show and NEVER seeing a REAL Custom Auto, I had this expectation that my dream of sticking my very first real knife, costing me four figures in my pocket had finally come true. nd to be Honest, if I plan to plop down two to three grand to buy a knife, I kinda wanta hold it carass it, study it, rub it, DAM< have sex with it!!!!!! But I walk up to a custom knife case full of names I have only READ about and there they were, the knives of my dreams!!!! Orgasim time. So where is that style in the AUTO VERSION? Sorry the Blah Blah FLORIDA Circut court has said and my Brothers and Sisters in LE has started to enforce the High end autos and sure we might be able to cut a back room deal, but no guarantee I will ever get it home to NH, BUT that AR-15, that Glock, That Anti-Tank gun, just do the paperwork and NO PROBLEM. The issue is not simply Wolfie is mad and spoliled cause he did not get HIS Auto and YEAH, AH you could have bought that gorgeous folder for $1,800 and it was GORGEOUS, BUT...... this effects ALL of us and when and where does it stop and when and why have WE, the Knife folks put our hands collectively in our wallets and proven the utter stupidity of a COURT RULING, NOT LAW, which benefits FELONS F's JOHN Q. CITIZEN and some Law Enforcement Agencies are filling their evidence lockers with OUR knives. But Tomorrow, some moron will smack my son in the head with an aluminum softball bat and DAMNIT, I want them all outlawed. So, what are WE gonna do?.....Sorry venting, this is WRONG!!!!!! wolf

Excuse me... I've missed something (actually that is not unusual:) )
Would someone fill me in on what circuit court and what the decision was ref auto knives? And is this the same decision mentioned in the last issue of Blade Mag?
Thanks,
Charlie D

Next time, come to Oregon.

You'll hike around Crater Lake, one of the most beautiful places in the world. You'll ski on Mt. Hood regardless of what week of the year you come. You'll go ocean fishing off our rugged coast. You'll attend a play at our internationally famous Shakespear Festival. You'll go sailboarding where it all started in the Columbia River Gorge. You'll play golf on championship courses. You'll shop at Northwest Knives and Collectibles and at George and Son Cutlery, and you'll find all the autos you could possibly desire.

This message brought to you by a special grant from The Oregon Tourist Commission. Oregon: It's a great place to visit... but you don't want to live here.

I'm leaving tonight for a 2 week Florida Vacation. Shoot, you didn't mention Brass Knuckles in there! :D

Guess I'll have to leave the Brass Knuckles at home and take along penknife instead. ;)

Well, I can empathize to a degree, wolfman. Last nite, for whatever reason, I finally decided to look up the laws in my state. The primary statute is squirrely. One can basically carry anything, and can carry most of them concealed, unless it is in a "furtive manner." Anything resembling an auto, including any knife that can be wrist flicked open is illegal here. Means I need to de-lubricate 2 of my knives. I don't wrist snap them, but easily could. Actually, need to check out several others. They too might be able to snapped open.

If a knife is misused and over 3" long, then one can be convicted of a gross misdemeanor, which means up to a year in the county hotel. No joint time for gross misdemeanors here.

I often think that the primary effect of a great many statutes that our elected representatives enact serve primarily to prove how goofy they are. You're right tho, that a silly-assed court decision ought not to create law. Oh well, the last election showed that the system in Florida is a bit squirmy.

I think the better custom dealers allow the prompt return of knives, if they don't suit. So, you might drop a bit in postage, but you still could check out prospective knives until you got a keeper.

Good luck.

Oregon cracks me up, you can own auto knives but its illegal to pump your own gas, rotflmao. The other day I stopped at a local gas station and saw an SUV with Oregon plates and two women sitting there waiting for someone to pump thier gas. I started laughing and said "Sorry ladies we arent in Oregon" Man did I get a dirty look, rotflmao.

I guess as a newbie, my tirade about the utter ignorance of some moron Judge, who once again placed the rights of the DEFENDANT way above the rights of the VICTIMS of our society just P-ed me off. This decision as I read it over and over again had to do with a "ballistic" knife or some knife capable of "firing it's blade" after seperation from the handle at a target. I go to Florida ONCE a year from the crime free boonies of New Hampshire, where we have very few home invasions, 30 murders, 25 of them are domestic related or the victim knew his/her killer. MOST homes have and keep firearms and your children are TRAINED starting at age three that the firearm carries with it the enormous responsibility equal to it's enormous power. Very simple to teach, to learn and to understand. A gun is an awesome means of power and to be able to use that power correctly one MUST BE RESONSIBLE, not expecting the gun devoid of a brain to be to blame for unleashing it's forever, no turning back awesome power once YOU decide to unleash the beast at another human being. So now we move to a Custom hand made auto-knife, and for the life of me I see no relationship of correlation between a "Ballistic Knife" a Firearm or a means of issuing deadly force that carries that same awesome responsibility. I see the killing ability of a knife as equal to a Ball Peen hammer in the hands of an "expert" in the use of either to inflict injury. So wolf, shut UP ALREADY, suck it up and just go to the BF or BA or hit one of the great places on the Net. I am drooling over the new Brad Duncan knives thru Joel Pirella. So I just knew that these Gigantic Brick and Mortar Custom shops would have the newest models so I did not have to drool for weeks and just BUY IT. But the bottom line out of all of my silly ranting and raving and venting is that this COURT RULING is JUST the start of things to come. The newest brainchild of Ted Kennedy, the "Master" of keeping the Grand Ole USA safe" is a LAW that would REQUIRE you and I to CERTIFY that if we ever took a child into a Hospital for Emergency treatment like stitching up his shin after a nasty fall off his skateboard, KENNEDY wants us to sign a Document that CERTIFIES we are bringing our child home to a "Gun safe/free Home". YUP, NOPE it SURE will not pass, but the next one and the next one and the next one and at some point a certain LAW might just end up being voted in requiring all us Honest people to be circumcised prior to owning a Kitchen knife while all the Criminals of the world continue to buy what they want and need at their inner city "Flea markets". I guess all I am venting and ranting about is that we need ONE STRONG voice to end this madness.....I really am sorry guys, I am just a NEWBIE, but this is not the right way to go about removing my ART WORK from my hands......wolf

wolfmann601,

Hi welcome to the neighborhood, sorry to hear about the autos. I knew Steve was worried about his inventory of autos, but I didn't know he had dropped it all together. :(

As long as you're down here you may want to take a ride over to check out the Kellam Knives co. store. It's about an hour North of Guns and Knives.

Wolfman, as close as you'll come to "live free or die" is probably Arizona. Yup, my home state, although I used to live in Northwood, NH. Az is great, get a CCW and you can carry anything concealed. Anything else has to be in plain sight, if it is, no problem. No specific laws on knives. Great place, like the USMC, we're always looking for a few good men. OK, I'm in NM, working now- but will be in AZ as soon as I can. :)

Guys, Thanks for at least understanding the utter silliness of this. Steve, a Gentleman of the finest caliber has had to wholesale tens of thousands of dollars because his business is GUNS and KNIVES and if he even has ONE $4.00 clone POS auto or "gravity" knife, out goes his FFL and a GUN SHOP that CANNOT SELL GUNS is like a Bar where you cannot buy a drink. So Steve is worried. Steve cannot "risk" the loss of his ENTIRE business, his entire world, because one of my over zealous "Brothers" or "Sisters" in Law Enforcement come in in soft clothes and try to cut a back room deal with some flash cash and WHAM, GOT YA!!! And then what about me, I get "lucky" and buy that auto. HOW do I get it home to NH? Will UPS or the USPS decide to check MY package and DAMN found THAT auto or check my Luggage and it does not matter if the baggage guy steals it or the FEDS steal it, I am out of a knife, the money and the ruling calls for the "confiscation and disposal" at the discretion of the Law Enforcement Agency taking possession of what is now CONTRABAND. So why would I want to plop down a grand or more of my money, and "guys" I can just barely pay my F&&8658ng bills,to buy a knife for someone else. And the sadness of this all is some "brother Officer" in Florida might now be walking around with a super custom sticking in his boot, cutting tops off sodan cans, playing "throw the knife games" and then chucking it his "junk Drawer" in the kitchen as he/she has no idea what it is they are playing with. So, Rant wolfie, run home to NH and strap on my .45 ACP but in Florida where I just might NEED to protect myself, I might get busted if my spyderco has been well broken in and some "genius" declares it a GRAVITY knife!!!!!! I want my black flies, ticks and mosquitos, cannot wait or maybe LIVE until Weds............wolf

Oregon cracks me up, you can own auto knives but its illegal to pump your own gas

As it should be!

Oregon lawmakers understand the real dangers that surround us. They understand that, statistically speaking, gasoline is more dangerous than automatic knives. They understand that the careless pumping of gas causes more injuries and deaths every year than automatic knives. They realize that the careless pumping of gas also causes environmental harm and is harmful to our overall health.

So, they've had the courage and the wisdom to focus their legislative efforts on issues that will actually help Oregonians live healthier and safer lives.

Unfortunately, the lawmakers and courts in some states seem to neglect such simple issues and focus instead on issues that are sensational but, in reality, irrelevant.

From that thread title I thought you were talking about all the ol' farts there...:p

Texas is pretty open on the weapons front, except of course carrying autos is a no-no.

Arizona is great, and I've thought of moving there. But man, especially this time of year, talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire...

That is what burns me. I could have gone to Tampa and gotten my knife. I just left the Thunderbird Flea market and in between the clone crap, I found some dealers selling auto's. No dickering, straight retail with the arguement that "they are taking a chance" and that is a $250 MOD so that's what you gotta pay. But the guy had about $500 bucks in stock so if he gets bagged, no big dael. But in Broward County, the Boys in my profession have very Strict orders to nail the big Guys selling ONLY Top-Ends and confiscate ALL their auto stock and if they also sell Guns, They get their FFL yanked. But in Tampa, NO ONE IS ENFORCING IT because it's a circuit court Ruling and the County in whih Tampa is Located is within the Jurisdiction of a DIFFERENT CIRCUIT COURT!!!!! But to you Master knifeknuts who know Steve, Guy and Howard at their brick and mortar Store, their stock is all owned by them and if they get caught, Steve loses his business, his livlihood, his investment, Guy and Howard are unemployed and the saddest part of it all, is the Judge left the ruling open-ended to protect the DREGS of society and has given Law Enforcement Carte Blanche to do with as is necessary to insure the "Contraband" now somehow fitting the definition of a "Ballistic knife" means any auto knife is not available to the citizen. The Holes in The Court ruling are so big a Good lawyer will drive a TT unit thru it and the big Dealers in florida will be business as usual, the knife business will not be as flat as it has been and while I the buyer have picked up some serious "steals in auto's this afternoon, I sincerely felt bad buying knives at whole sale from a young guy who sells knives to feed his family and was set -up at the flea market selling MOD's, MT's, Benchmarks, Paragons, and a few customs at below wholesale from his car trunk in the corner of the parking lot. OH YEAH, I bought some knives today for example I paid $125 for a Dieter II Auto, $145.00 For a Trident, and sadly for the guy, gave him another $150 in cash for a MT Vector. ALL BRAND NEW in the box. but he just wanted out was dealing out of his truck like he was selling crack, I felt like a scumbag and a criminal and I even tried to offer him more but he said "just give me the money for those knives and if you got another $400 in cash I have a socom DA , a LCC Tactical, a kestral, a socom elite and a Paragon Mini Cobra Art series and I can pay some Bills, dump the rest of my autos and just go home. I did, he said he was happy, I had a mess of awesome autos and I FEEL LIKE GARBAGE... He had to feed his kids, I did not plan on buying these knives, but this silly court Ruling has this NEWBIE Knife Dealer in such financial straits he just wanted to leave with a grand or so in cash and I was his one and only customer. Correct that, he also had a Henckels Five Star Basic Set of three Kitchen knives my son gave him $25 to just clean him out so he could just go home. Man, I am ranting, venting, feeling crummy, but this Court rule MUST go!!!!!!....wolf
