Fluted Scales

Thanks Ray and Darren!

Shappa that's the knife I thought of when I read your initial post. That's really something and it makes me want to do it on a handle too. Cripes, everthing I see here, I want to do it too! :D

Since posting links to a search doesn't work, I'll post some individual links on this subject that I just found using the term "flutes", that Shappa recommended(thanks), though his link didn't work for me.

In the first one, look for the post by Kit.

Hey! That link to my search results worked for me when i checked it after posting...now it doesn't! :grumpy:

Mike, Those are the three major posts with the most useful info. Thanks for posting the individual posts.

I havent hit the archives yet... :)

I like this tip from A.T. Barr...
If you try to polish between the ridges with a buffer, you will dull the edge.

After I file the ridges, I use 320 grit sandpaper wrapped around a 1/8" brass rod. Then, to get that sharp edged, professional look, I use an ear swab (ear cleaner) that I chucked into my variable speed Dremel.

I first use a toothpaste that has a polishing compound, like Ultra-Brite. Then use semi-chrome to get that final polish.

one from D. Ralph...
A good way to put them in and make them look right side to side is to make two little blocks . Drill 2 holes the size of the file at the spacing you want for the flutes .
Put a rod the size of the file in one hole in the block and the file in the other. Then put your first flute in. The run the rod in the flute to put the next flute in. This keeps the flute in line on the material spacing wise.
Drill and tap the blocks to hold the rod and the file in place.
