So, it's that time of year, and the family vacation looms imminent. Flying out at dawn Monday for Medford Oregon, and a week in a rented cabin, (Gross exageration by rental agent, really a very large log home) overlooking the Rogue River. Jessica has made an itinerary that includes rafting, a jet boat ride, a trip to Crater Lake, and some other side trips.

Again I had the dilemma of picking one of my precious, and hoping it's still there when I get to where I'm going, or sending one ahead that can easily be replaced. I settled on a SAK again for the same reason of last year's trip to Key West. The thought of some TSA nazi or luggage thief ending up with my beloved resolza, or my GEC 15, was just too much. I figure if my SAK disappears, I can stop at a Target or Walmart and replace it.

Again, the advantage of the SAK availability almost anywhere is a nice thing. I'll take some pics to post when I get back.

Have fun Carl! I grew up not too far from Medford and have some very fond memories of time spent on the Rogue. You'll have a blast I'm sure. The other nice thing about a SAK is that it can easily open your beverage of choice...speaking of which, I could go for a beer right about now...

Have a nice time, Carl! Katie and I are heading to Maine for a week at a cabin in August. That week cant get here fast enough!

Have a safe and fun trip Carl, Crater Lake is a beautiful place. The last time we went there was about a foot of snow on the ground.

Nah, he's gonna drown some worms as my Old Man used to say... ;)

Stay safe and have fun Carl, take lottsa pics.

Enjoy your trip, Carl! It's been quite a few years since I've been out that way, but it's a beautiful part of the country with a ton of enjoyable outdoor activities.

Whaaaat? The TSA would never take a SAK. :D

Congrats on the vacation! Sounds like a blast, and the perfect setting for the Swede.

Okay Woodrow and whetrock, I sent out a Vic camper. The choice was made taking in what family members were there, location, and activities. Karen and daughter Jessica, are wine drinkers, so I know a corkscrew will be needed and don't know if one is at the cabin. We will be hiking in some timber country, and another day a raft trip on the river. I wanted a saw blade in case of a mishap in the mountains, or I found myself crawing out of the river in a remote spot after something going wrong on the water. I love saws for emergencies. If we get any fish, a nice sharp blade will nice. I like a cold gin and tonic on a warm afternoon, so slicing limes is going to be needed. Son in law John C. likes imported beer, so an opener is a nice thing to have. It's going to be hot, so John C. and myself will be indulging in our afternoon drinks.

The camper seemed a nice compromise between tools and bulk.

I'd love to take one of my precious, but I just don't trust the people handling my bag. If a SAK disappears, I'll just stop the rental car at a 'mart.

Carl.

Carl, Sounds like you have the big three covered (beer, wine and cocktails), and a few other less important needs as well. For similar reasons, I toted my Vic Huntsman on our recent trip to the Austria Alps, along with my Opinel 8, which saw most of the food-prep duty. I never felt under knifed.

Sounds like a great time to be had. Stay safe and have fun!

Good choice on the SAK. I pack one in my bag whenever I travel.

Jackknife I was there last year doing the same thing your doing basically. I had an absolute blast, only tip I can give is on the jet boat ride check your pockets before you get off the boat. Knife fell out of my short pants pocket and luckily a young kid behind me picked it up and handed to me. My family and I had a blast there I hope you do too.
Respectfully, Chance.
