Just got back from Barnes & Nobles and saw two books on their Clearance racks - and for the prices there's no reason not to buy them

First is FM 21-76, US Army Survival Manual. Only $8.98 and chock full of knowledge

Second is the Handbook of Knots & Splices by Charles E. Gibson, for only $5.98. Not a field manual or anything you want out there with you, but lots of pretty good illustrations and plenty of knots - I flipped through it, and decided that for $6.00 it wasn't like I was losing money....

Get 'em while they are hot!

Yup, I picked up a copy of the FM 21-76 there last week. Pretty good deal. I missed the one on knots, though. Have to check it out.

And so, to all outdoor folks, the knife is the most important item of equipment.

If you get a copy of FM 21-76, make sure you get the latest version, I think it's 1994 (the previous version was 1991 or earlier). The newest one has all the colored pictures of poisonous snakes and plants! I got mine "issued" so no cost but you can generally get one for $10 or less.
