BladeForums has been in existence for about twenty months, with recknives and KnifeForums dating back even farther. For those of us who have been involved with these groups for some time questions about the more basic and general aspects of our shared hobby/passion do become repetitive, sometimes to an extreme.

What we have to take into account is that we have new people of various backgrounds joining us every day, FNG’s (F*****g New Guy’s), as we would say in my Business.

One of the reasons we come here is for conversation with people who have common interests, perhaps insight into the questions we have. When a simple question is rebuked with an answer of “Use the Search Feature”, it defeats this goal entirely and renders this medium sterile and lifeless. Part of the beauty of the World Wide Web is the immediacy and interaction involved. When someone asks “What’s you favorite ______?” at the beginning of the Summer in the Year 2000, telling him to look for answers posted weeks or months ago is hardly the best advice. New knives and production techniques are being released constantly. Benchmade has two new models hitting the streets any day now, Darrel Ralph is cranking out new EDC pieces as we speak, to name but a few. Pointing someone towards dated information on the Internet is no better than Pony Expressing them a year old catalog, not to mention rather rude and belittling in a “Why didn’t you know everything on your first day?” kind of way.

Let’s relax and have some fun, people. As your Grandmother used to say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say…”

No one needs to open every thread that is posted, let alone reply to them. If you don’t feel like answering the same question more than once, then don’t. There are 3600 other people here to help take up the slack.

The least you can do is not be rude to the New Guy just because he's a New Guy.

As usual, James makes a lot of sense. I agree 100%

Thanks for posting James.

I also agree, if we take the right to ask the simplest of questions, then why are we here in the first place ?

All the knives in the world go round and round, round and round, round and round...DAMN, one of them took my wallet !!! :)

And then there's the old proverb - "The dumbest question is the one you didn't ask."

If I have direct experience/knowledge related to a "FNG's" question, I'll answer directly. If not and I remember an extensive thread(s) about the subject, I'll suggest using the search. I figure this answer is better than NO answer which sometimes happens with some of the questions. Eventually, someone will answer but sometimes not before the FNG feels like s/he is being ignored.

As a FNG, I appreciate what you all have said. I also appreciate the comments even more coming from 6 guys with 400+ posts. As a FNG, I can assure you that we/I don't intentionally ask stupid/just answered questions.

At the risk of reinforcing my FNG status, I have to ask what two new Benchmade models will be hitting the streets any day now since I am a big BM fan, are they the 940 and 722?
If so, any word on any other new releases (M2 705)?

Thanks for the FNG support guys,

Bucky (FNG)

James,
Well done on the wonderful posting!
Can't agree more reading along those lines you've stated!
After logging into Bladeforums for less than 2 weeks, I've learnt much from topics Ive posted from the regulars.
Some replys sounded arrogantly nasty but there were kinder folks who used "newbie" as for newcomers.
Now, that's extremely reassuring! Where I come from, resources on knives are scarce and one has to pay dearly to get books and magazines on the subject.
So, thanks for the sound advice!

I remember being an FNG here! I was pretty much welcomed with open arms

I appreciated that!!!!!
When I was a newbie, I found MANY questions answered in the achives and often refer to them today.
ANY FNG'S

(that's funny stjames) Are MORE than welcome to put a question in the form of Email and fire it off to me..... For the Blackwood Knives prospective on things!! Usually the newbie questions are easier to answer, the longer they are active members, the tougher the questions get

Thanks for posting the same thoughts I've been having, James. My other point would be that if we just rely on the archival posts the knowledge base is essentially dead. Who knows, the last 20 guys that joined might have valuable input on a subject that we'll never get to hear if the thread is ended with "Do a search".

Thanks James,
Not only is this forum about sharing information and ideas, but also building friendships with a common interest.

Bucky, Yes those are the 2 new models and hopefully they will be hitting the streets in numbers soon. The M2 705 has not hit the streets yet but rumor has it that it should appear in the next 30-60 days. I also heard a rumor that it was killed but I think the project is a go.

Bucky - The pre-production 940's are shipping out to authorized (e.g. those with storefronts) Benchmade dealers right now. Only 1000 were produced and should sell out fast. The regular production 940's are running ahead of schedule and shouldn't be too much longer off before they hit the distribution pipeline.

Well said James,we were all FNGs once with annoying questions that the more seasond members took the time to answer.

Mike Turber, M2 705?????? What 'choo talkin' about Willis? Why am I the last to hear about these things? I've only been making noise about an M2 705 since the 705 came out! Dag-gonnit! Any more details? Thanks.

Professor.

Very well said! Excellent advice for how to treat everyone. A little decent respect and civility goes a long way.

That's why I like this place. Just a bunch of cool informed people doing their best to help each other out.

Thanks James

I'd like to hear more about the M2 705 as well... please....

Also, I'd like to hear more about the Anso Personal that I supposedly won in last months giveaway. I still don't have it, and I already e-mailed once separately to try to find out if I had done something wrong. Sorry for posting this here, but the next step is posting a new thread....

. I hadn't thought much about it until I didn't get a reply to my e-mail. Also, sorry to post it here, but I did notice that Mike was in this thread at some point....
