I just plate quenched some D2 blades and when I tried to pull them out of the oven the bags were swollen up like balloons. I have never had this happen before. I have about 15 more blades I want to do. They quenched straight and seem to be hard, but not sure how hard. My 60 Rc hardness file does not want to scratch them. I am going to go ahead and temper them JIC they are good to go. Does anybody know why the bags swelled up?

I'm only guessing, but it seems that something inside the pouches must have expanded as it got hot. Was there possibly any oil or moisture on the blades?

The blades were dry and clean. I was wondering if I put too much paper in the pouch.

To much paper ;)

That really is what I thought it would be. I just thought it was weird that I never saw that before. I have had problems with the foil sticking to the steel so I thought I needed more paper for a barrier.

Bingo....one tiny piece of paper makes a large volume of CO2 and other smoke. A big piece of paper makes a bigger amount of gas.

Thanks Guys. The issue is noted and hopefully won't happen again.

Thanks for the help guys. I just did some more blades with smaller paper and all went well. Blades came out very clean.

Thanks for the tip on the talc, I will try that next time I go to 2150 degrees.
