i was wondering what every considers abuse of a folder
like how hard can you use a folder before it is consider abuse to you?
what is the worst abuse you have ever done to a folder?

This can become a controversial subject, my advice to you is to use the search function and you will see certain trends along the line:

Its only for cutting, use a fixed blade, should be able to pry open a safe, why would you want to pry? Buy a pry bar and then some name calling starts and emotions start floating around.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for (my apologies) but using the search function really helps.

here is a search for the two terms: folder and abuse (106 threads popped up).

There is no clear definition on what is seen as abuse for a folder really. Batoning seems to be one, but proper technique is required no matter the knife, using it as a screwdriver is a big abuse IMO and this (the knife is one I made myself for a CRKT M16 handle):

I don't abuse folders.

If I am even close to thinking about wether or not doing X is abuse or if doing X could possiblly cause a lock or pivot failure...then I use a fixed blade.

Worst is beating one through that spray foam insulation between an air conditioner and the wall board, found a few nails that I didn't realize were there. Pocket knife was the only tool on hand that would fit in the narrow space. Battoned one through some 1 inch wood once to get a fire going when I didn't have a fixed blade with me and most of the wood was too wet to start burning.

Looking at the job at hand and thinking "It's gonna break my knife if I use it to do this job." But going ahead and using it to do the job anyway! That's abuse!!!

i know it can be contraversial but im saying YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL what do YOU consider abouse?
im not asking what IS considerd abuse

I've used my old S&W sort as a screwdriver and to pry a jammed casing out of a barrel of a gun. That was before I even liked knives, I didn't give them much respect back then. Now I would never do those things even with a cheap knife.

Even limiting the discussion to folders, what counts as abuse really depends on the knife. Some knives like Hinderers and Strider, ZT 0300 (as well as various customs) with thick blades and very strong pivots are built to stand up to some not-too-heavy prying should the need arise. But if you were to try the same thing with a thin-bladed slicer, you could probably expect to break the tip of the knife. That's why I like this definition from earlier in the thread:

Looking at the job at hand and thinking "It's gonna break my knife if I use it to do this job." But going ahead and using it to do the job anyway! That's abuse!!!

When I constantly make it feel like it's not worthy of being in my pocket, thats it's dull, and will never be sharp. Occasionally slap it (when nobody's around ofcourse). Sometimes I touch it inappropriately, and then tell it not to tell anyone.

Thats folder abuse.

Or..... when you hold the folder up to your face and call it a "ho", then slap it across the right scale with your right hand, and send it flying into a wall. As its laying on the ground, give it a dirty look then spit on it and walk away.... leaving it laying there abused.

How's that for some folder abuse.

EDIT: Just realized the person above me posted something similar.... evil-minds think alike :D

If you got a Sebenza or any other +$400 knife, I would say it's abuse just to open the box it came in.

ROFL. I'll bet there are more than a few guys who treat them that way.

I had a friend who was machinist and mechanic. He was adamant that using any tool for something it was not designed to do was abuse of the tool. I am the type to use a screwdriver and a ratchet instead of going to the toolbox to get a chisel and a hammer. I got the abuse lecture many times. So abusing a folder is as easy as using it for something not intended to do by the designer. :D

Knives are tools. Tools are devices of work. Therefore, just about any time you use your tool to perform a task you are using it correctly. Abuse comes in when you either use the wrong tool for the job or you perform a job that you didn't really need to just so you can use the tool.

Examples of abuse:
Using a knife as a screwdriver, hammer, or other prybar when those other tools are available to you. Not having those tools available and settling on using your knife is not abuse if the job is more important than your knife.
Going out and stabbing sheet metal or chopping 2x4s with a knife just because you want to.

Evidently, using centrifugal force to aid in opening a sebenza is like shaking a baby to make it stop crying.

Or something.

I can hard flick and baton drive knives by many other brands for half the cost, none of the headache and none of the lecturing about how opening it with a flick is like keying your own car. And those other knives have lasted me years and years.

All that said, using a folder as a pry bar is just plain wasting your money.

Even the best folders should only be used for light duty cutting chores.

Once any serious force starts to be required a fixed blade should be employed.

In the field I usually depend on my fixed blade for most cutting chores keeping my razor sharp folder in reserve for when a super sharp edge is required.
