folder batoning?

really dumb idea imo. Would you haul around a 2 ton boat with your porche? I think not--thats what trucks are for.

Right tool for the job.

I'm going to agree with "Why would you do that?"
Get a hatchet if you don't like fixed blades, they work great.

I've batoned my Small Graphics Sebenza through about 4 logs or so. (only tool I had with me and needed it to start a fire) It will do it, but they dont suggest you use it for that.

The sebenza was fine after FYI.

i've done it with a buck 110 many times (with a rock even) with no issues...bottomline; if i have to do it i will...if it ruins the blade, so be it; i'll get another...

It can be done, but it's not the best tool for the job. Is it safe to baton with a folder? I wouldn't recommend it. Obviously if you're posting here then you know you'll be batoning, so why not use a fixed blade or a hatchet?

Here's a vid showing how to baton with a folder (if you insist on using the wrong tool). Starts at ~7 minutes.

The trick seems to be to do it with the blade unlocked, so that all that extra stress doesn't damage the mechanism. Easier and safer to use a fixed blade or axe.

no! To many parts that can break IMO. Of any folder! I would not even do it with an opinel or any pocket knife. Buy a R.A.T for that, or a Busse or better yet, buy an axe!

That video made me really want to get the Rat 1 :D

As far as batoning with a folder, I've done it several times with my Emerson Commander. It's one hell of a knife and it keeps on kicking. I prefer folders for their ease of carry and legalities in town, so since it's something I'll always have with me I like to practice using it for various tasks. I would hope a strider or sebenza would be up to the challenge, but even I wouldn't want to baton with such an expensive knife :o

My commander gets the beating because it is my go-to-knife.

You can with a good knife, but using a fixed blade is a lot smarter.

I've used folders for light batoning of kindling, if I'm going to be splitting some thicker wood I'd whittle a wedge with the knife.

+1 on that one.
A wedge would save a lot of wear and tear on the folder.
Also, The blade should be unlocked, though make sure your fingers are outta the way.
I used my Opinel #9 for batonning a lot, and it seems to do better than some of the fixed blades I used
Though if I plan to go to the woods and baton, I always take a Becker or a RAT with me.

Maybe if you want to baton through twigs with your 3 inch blades ;)

Since he's taking about doing it with a folder I was trying to keep the size down.

I actually did some batoning with my Izula the other day and was surprised at how well it worked.

LOL:p seriously I have to laugh sometimes when I see pictures of someone batonning through 1in twigs with their 3inch neck knife. I wouldn't be rude and say it, but I'm thinking, "dude couldn't you just pick up the stick and snap it with your hands, smash it on a rock, prop it against a tree or rock and jump on it etc" But yeah, I won't say anything cause I like the pictures.

A few weeks back, I batonned with my medium Douk-Douk. I was harvesting a sapling to eventually make a snath out of. The area where I got it from takes me through a suburban neighbourhood, so I wasn't about to go trudging down the road with a khukuri, parang or hatchet.

I did get a roll on one part of the edge by the time I was finished cutting the sapling to the right length and separating a piece that I thought could be used for the snath's handle. I do tend to reprofile my folders pretty acute, I confess. Still, got the job done with an inexpensive slipjoint that is still functional if not aesthetically unscathed afterwards. :D

Of course, I could have taken my SwissChamp instead. D'OH!
