folder batoning?

The tool for the job is the tool you have on you. No one goes to a gunfight with a pistol, they grab a shotgun. Unfortunately when we need a tool the one we have on us is usually less effective because we carry it because it is less heavy than the better tools. But, if you know enough that you will need the pocket knife for batonning, you probably have a good idea when you will need to use it, hence you can go prepared with a fixed blade or hatchet.

If thats all I had and I needed too, I sure would baton with my folder.

If you broke a emerson or strider by batoning it, would they replace it with their warentee?

It can be done, but it's not the best tool for the job. Is it safe to baton with a folder? I wouldn't recommend it. Obviously if you're posting here then you know you'll be batoning, so why not use a fixed blade or a hatchet?

Here's a vid showing how to baton with a folder (if you insist on using the wrong tool). Starts at ~7 minutes.

There was no damage to the lock of the knife, but he almost batoned/closed the folder onto his finger. Anyone who knows anything about survival will agree that a serious/deep cut in the middle of nowhere can lead to very bad things.

It's why I carry a Busse ASH-1 AND a folder, you never know.

Exactly why it's a better choice to go with a fixed blade.

I've batoned my Small Graphics Sebenza through about 4 logs or so. (only tool I had with me and needed it to start a fire) It will do it, but they dont suggest you use it for that.

The sebenza was fine after FYI.

You mean in Seattle, in the woods, ya couldn't find wood small enough layin' around either standin' or on the ground to start a fire but ya could find "logs" that could be batoned into more manageable pieces by a small classic Sebbie. :)

Exaggerate much.:)

One other question, what did ya baton the back of the knife with, 'cause that's the size of wood that would make a good fire, you did say ya only did 4 logs so ya weren't there too long.

Not sayin' it ain't so just questionin' the details and no I wouldn't baton with a folder there are other alternatives, like breakin' between trees, feedin' longer pieces of logs and fallen trees into the fire.

JMHO

Sure you can baton with a folder. You can also use your car to put a big holes in things, doesn't make your car a wrecking ball. Right tool for the right job dude. That said, if I HAD to baton with a folder, although I can't think of a situation like that, I would pick a strider first, sebenza very close second.

is it safe to baton wood with a folder such as a strider or maybe even a sebenza?

If you don't lock the handle, just letting it flop, then there is no stress on the lock and baton away, you may on the blade.
