Folder Clips: Convenience or Something Else

I use the clip on my knives to make it more accessible to me. It allows me to conveniently pull the knife out of my pocket without having to rummage through my pocket and also to remove it more quickly.
However, I did lose a clipped knife once.
It's convenience but it can make it a little more easy for your knife to grab onto something else and slide out of your pocket.
Mine was a user yellow Mini Ritter Grip. I could have lost something worth a lot more, but that knife was one of my favorites and I carried it on a daily basis.

A clip may be more convenient, but can make losing your knife a little easier unless you carefully watch everywhere you sit or how you move. So the pocket clip does have it's ups and downs. This being said, I still carry my knives using the clip. I haven't had anymore problems. I've lost one knife in about 4 or 5 years. I do watch my pocket a little more closely now though.

Mobile phones have gotten to be so big that I can't carry them in my pocket anymore. So I've taken to hauling my phone around in a holster attached to my belt instead. The good news is that it's freed up one of my front pockets for the exclusive use of my folder. That seems to work really well for me.

I did lose a Sebenza that was clipped to my pocket. What did I do? Grabbed a different Sebenza, clipped it to my pocket and moved on. Stuff happens.

I ended up getting the lost Sebenza back, as it fell off in my inlaw's bar. I was very happy.

Sometimes, just because the knife features a clip, doesn't mean I'll use it. Some clips leave too much handle sticking out which allows the knife to slide back and forth. In that case, I put it in the small watch pocket of my jeans. I do this with my kizer 3404 and lionsteel opera.

On the other hand, some knives are long enough to not worry about the clip coming loose. The spyderco southard is a prime example, it long enough so that the g10 side has a lot of surface area to grip my pocket.

Although I never carry assisted knives, clipped or not. I had a kershaw chive open up while clipped tip down, and I bent down to put my shoe on and got stabbed in my side. Nothing serious, but still!

Funny you should mention the Kizer 3404. I removed the clip from mine this morning and it's been resting comfortably at the bottom of my pocket ever since. Doesn't show any sign of wanting to escape from there either. ;)

So true! 10 years ago they were so small you had to dial numbers with a toothpick. 10 years before that you needed a backpack to carry one!

Now, it's like carrying a deck of cards in your pocket!

Maybe, some knife company will integrate the phone and edc knife into one package! Heck, most come with flashlights now!

"behold, the new Samsung mnandi, now featuring surefire, all your edc need in one pocket."

My Grip's clip once got caught on a duffel bag full of paint gear in our work truck, it was in a side pocket of my bibs though and I felt it's displacement almost immediately, looked over and saw it neatly clipped on the bag.

Never had issues with RF pocket though.

I have a solution. It's called a push pin lanyard. I showed it to Chris at the Blade Show. He said, "It's to clunky". Yes, but when Chris loses a knife, he doesn't have to buy a new one. You can use this in a pocket or on a belt with a right or left side carry. The pin goes in from both sides. The lanyard hole must be drilled to accommodate the the push pin (3/32" diameter). This rig is a loss prevention set up. I detach the knife from the lanyard whenever I am using it unless I am cleaning fish at the end of the dock. If I am cleaning fish, I wrap the lanyard around my wrist to preclude it falling in the water.View attachment 436322
