Folder design flaws...still

Does anyone from Cold Steel post in this forum like Sal Glesser does from Spyderco?
OP mentioned they thought the Cold Steel guy was getting overwhelmed on here.

Hopefully they're lurking in the forums, taking notes from their customers.[/QUOTE]
I think if they were interested in doing that they would have kept their own Forum up.

It must have cost to much to run and maintain, so they abandoned it. Am I the only one who doesn't see the point of those demonstration videos they make?

. Am I the only one who doesn't see the point of those demonstration videos they make?

I hear this question a lot and while "you" don't get the point of the videos, I don't really get the point of the question.

When people are in the market for a knife they usually look at many models and makers and ask themselves questions such as; what was the knife primarily designed for, what steel do they use, what is the edge retention like, etc, etc. On most manufacturer sites you see a glamour shot picture of the knife, maybe the sheath, and a few scant stats. Some may even take the time to write a generic phrase or sentence, but that's it. It leaves people's primary questions unanswered.

On the other hand, Cold Steel does videos that usually begin with an introduction of the knife, the steel or different steels they offer the knife in, and the uses the knife was designed for. Then they show you the knife doing those tasks and take it to a level that few would do. For example, many years ago CS did one such video of their Trailmaster. They showed it cutting a tennis ball with one chop, slicing through (4) one inch hanging hemp ropes with one chop, cutting through meat, bamboo and flexing the knife in a vice past 40 degrees. They showed the knife making over a thousand cuts through 1 inch hemp and still having an edge.

So my question is, why is a video that offers roughly 500% more information about their knives than their competitors, and demonstrations of the knife doing the things it was designed to do "not getting to the point?" What more can you ask for? What it usually boils down to is that people don't like Lynn's confident aggressive manner. Personally I would be willing to bet if theses videos were originally done by a hot woman or some Men's Warehouse suit model they would be the most talked about brand ever. But Lynn seems to bring out something in people and they focus on his attitude rather than watch the knife.

I remember when the videos were coming out and everyone said that their $600 edc folders could do this, and their "super metal du jour" blades can do that. Well, about decade has past since these videos were made so where are all the competitors videos? Someone please post the links to the knives that make over a thousand cuts on one inch hemp rope or get flexed 40 degrees without snapping. Let's see all the knives, or kukri, or swords that can cut 15 one inch hanging hemp ropes in one swing. My question remains, what is it that people want? Just the glamour shot pick and the blade length with a price? Or detailed explanations and videos that show the knife working? Personally I wish they would go back to the longer videos with more narration like the old ones.

I have no problem whatsoever with Lynn, and you made a lot of good points. It just that many of the tests I can do with a $10.00 triple rivet, full tang, 3.5" forged paring knife from Walmart. Such as, cutting and punching through leather, slashing and stabbing at meat carcasses. As long as you know how to put a good edge on your knife, it will perform these tasks, but you'll need to sharpen it more often, with softer steel.

Meh. Why stop at the Wal-Mart knife? You could use a sharpened butter knife IF you're good enough at laying down an edge and IF you wanted to sharpen it after every cut... IF.

A butter knife would require more force, and would most likely hurt the palm of your hand in the process. The pairing knife mentioned above is thicker, heavier, and feels good in the hand.

there used to be an employee but haven't seen them post in a long while.

They are more active at Instagram. Bladeforums is too toxic for any constructive/adult discussions. Plus there's a bigger audience/community at instagram anyway

dont know if that is a fair statement. I wouldnt call Instagram adult or constructive. its kinda the exact opposite of that. this paid for by cold steel forum here isnt heavy traffic...... so I do agree with the bigger audience part of your statement. that part is very true.

Yeah my main point is around bigger audience at IG, they definitely have their fair share of juvenile troll there, but considering the 150k follower they have there, it's a fair tradeoff. The disproportionate amount hate and snarkiness they get here(less so in CS forums but more so in general) is probably not worth the effort considering that this is already a very specialized forums for aficionados that prob makes up very small part of their market.
If im running CS and have limited marketing/community resources, i would rather focus on places like IG where i can get a better outreach to general audiences.
I enjoyed their videos BTW, just like how i enjoy IIHS car crash testing video.

fair point. thanks for the followup.

The hole in the handle scale on my Recon 1 for the pivot bolt is just a massive jagged/ragged hole. Not round. The head of the pivot bolt barely secures the scale with this hole. I'm waiting for the scale to come off.
