I'm sure that something like this has been posted before, maybe under a different title. I just wanted to ask how many of you are always looking for two or three things in a folder that will make it or break it as a buy, and what are those two or three characteristics?

Since I was young I have always looked for the largest folder's I could find. To date, that hasn't stopped. I will buy some shorter folders as long as they meet a certain requirement, but turn down another if that characteristic isn't there. I'm sure this sounds very fickle, and I guess it is, but if I'm going to spend my hard earned money, I sure want it to be on something I like and not a compromise.

So, to the jist of the matter. I like thick blades, I like thick liners, I like G-10/micarta/wood handles. If those three things aren't there, then I don't buy it. Not to say that something is wrong with a particular knife if it doesn't have those things, just a knife that's not for me.

Another thing I do not like about a folder is the two sided handle material. I'm just an OCD freak about symmetry. I tried a ZT0300 on 2 different occasions, and both times ended up selling it within a week or two. I just can't get into it. This is the reason I didn't get into the Hest folder, ZT050/ZT0560 folders. I love ZT but not that type of construction.

Now, anyone else in the same frame of mind as me? Any OCD freaks in our midst, besides me of course? Who wants those thicker blades and liners, or the deal is off? Anyone in the same boat as me when it comes to the titanium/G-10 handle construction? Just post it right here and get it off your chest!!:)

There are several things that I look for...

I am pretty picky on the aesthetics of a blade. I like a spear point, or something with a keen point and not much belly. For instance as a crude illustration I like some Benchmades but I don't seem to like the ZT knives.

I must have one-hand features such as pocket clip, a lock such as liner lock or axis lock but I'm not real picky about the exact lock, and preferably a thumb stud. I also prefer tip down carry although for a smaller knife such as 3" blade I can work about as well with tip up.

I want scales on both sides, so I don't like frame locks.

For my use I prefer a blade in the 3.25"-3.6" range.

I like scales that offer good grip either due to shape or material or both.

Right now in my pocket I have an S30V Kershaw Blur. I've been carrying a Benchmade mini-grip. There are various Benchmades I'm looking at, and I'm also considering a Spyderco P2 and an Ontario RAT 1.

Excellent blade steel, prefer new super-steels. Three to 3 1/2" blade. Compression or axis lock is nice, but not necessary. Drop-point preferred. I want scales on BOTH sides of the knife. The fancy expensive ones give one nice scale; you can look at mechanics on the other. Don't understand that.
Must be thin enough to carry reasonably; to me that means about 0.450" thick. Want decent clip; prefer tip up.
