I always thought a simple solution would be a pocket clip on a leather pouch that sat in the same orientation as the knife clip is generally intended. Loose enough fit the knife was easy to retrieve and replace, clip "depth" of carry could be varied to infinitely more levels than a clip constrained to being on the knife.
