Folder for 10 year old

Kids love translucent blue manix 2's. cool color axis type lock, non assisted, reasonable size. Sounds like everything you're looking for.

take a look at the ka-bar dozier hunter 3 in blade pocket clip easy to sharpen and its only about 20 bucks comes in different colors great all around knife

I second the Delica.

Also for the new-ish Rat 2's!

I have a Dragonfly Salt and I'm pretty young. It's my first "legit" knife per say but the H1 is great because I don't have to worry about rust.

Locking Swiss Army Knife

I got them for my two step-sons and they use them often. It's got the important tools a person might use (the kids look for things to tighten) and the saw comes in handy on camping trips. It's got the "wow" factor for a kid too.

It's on the large size, but just might be a knife that a kid can't outgrow.

A smaller, simpler knife would be a Dragonfly or Delica, but a Mini-Grip would be great too.

I concur with the Dragonfly. I had one for a while, and its a great little knife. Small size, but with impressive cutting power. I had a simple black one, pinned construction, I think the handle was FRN, or maybe plastic. Loved it, shed tears when I lost it. Or maybe a small Opinel to start with, and a Dragonfly when he shows that he appreciates the simple knife. Use the modern folder as a rite of passage, maybe, when he has learned a bit about knives, their uses and maintenance.

I have an 8year old and I got him a SAK . He takes it everwhere . Now you have a 10 and what I will get him is an orange FRN dragonfly that a sweet knife and the color will make it more appealing for a 10 year old son . In my opinion the delica and the mini grip are great choice for a teenager to big to carry in a size 14 pants .

Spyderco Byrd Robin 2 (what my young fella will be getting for his 10th in a few weeks) or the new Ontario Rat-2.

I would go Rat2 on the cheaper and Griptilian on the higher end. I plan on buying my son a Rat2 before we head off into the woods.

While I've never handled one, the Spyderco Junior was designed for young kids. It has a large choil that acts like a guard, and it also has a compression lock, which is one of the best locks on the market.

I wouldn't recommend the Leek, that tip is a little to thin for him, and what was mentioned above about the assisted opening, you want to get him something that is easy to open and close, and a blade that he can actually use without the fear of snapping a half inch off the blade.
I would say the Spyderco Dragonfly, and better yet, the Spyderco Ambitious, it has that nice, small slightly chunky handle that can be easily gripped, the blade on it has a bit more strength to it than the thinner recommendations above. And if he loses it, it is not expensive to buy again. Heres a pic of it (Pics from Bing as my camera is broken) :

It just looks like a blade perfect for a kid or someone with small hands, and you can also teach him to make lanyard for it  Good luck

Emerson mini CQC-15.I used to have one & remember feeling it was too small for my hands. It's probably perfect for smaller hands.

Mini-Grip. For all the stated reasons PLUS you can get him custom scales later on if you desire, say for Christmas.

As an aside, you should be proud for raising him to handle knives.

My brother is a controlling helicopter dad, and when his son (my nephew) turned 16 I mailed him a SAK for Christmas. I received a card shortly after thanking me for the PEN. My brother apparently secretly opens presents to make sure they are "safe" for his little babies. And secretly replaces "inappropriate" gifts with other stuff. Needless to say my nephew is screwed up and spoiled, thanks to his overprotective parents.

Bummer man, the kid is missing out

Wouldn't it be best to get him one that isn't chisel grind for the first one though?
