Folder for a $30 max budget.

Check kershawguys Kershaw blem thread in the dealer section. All his prices are shipped so I'm sure you can find him a heck of a knife (like a Leek!) for his budget.

I think he will like the Ontario Rat-1 but how does the AUS-8 steel go? I have a couple of them and not really a fan of that steel.

Get thee to a WallyWorld - and get yee comrade a Buck 110 Folding Hunter - a true classic lockback. It's not small - but it is stout - and made in Idaho. Okay, the sheath is an import, but the knife is made here, in the USA. With s/t, it should be ~$30 or less. Their usual properly heat treated (Paul Bos) 420HC blade metal - which will come as a razor - and stay that way for quite a while.

Yeah do you guys like the Rat-1, like is it smooth and easy to close?

Smoother than my Spyderco Endura 4 - really easy to flick open and easy to close. When open there is no side-to-side play or up & down play - it is solid as. It sharpens up well and is a good cutter. It is a great solid feeling knife.

Of course there are plenty of better knives with better steel, but not for the same price. There are plenty of worse knives too, often at a dearer price.

spderco delica, endura or byrd is what i would get for a decent knife less than $50, all 3 can be had for $30 or so, if ya look hard enough.

one of my friends saw my Spyderco in my pocket and now he want's a knife. He said he likes how the Spyderco feels but not so much of the hole. I know, he's insane but could you fine gents suggest a less then $30 knife for my buddy?

Buck's new line of Bucklites is made in the USA. They look pretty nice, fit that price range, and don't have opening holes. Their Folding BuckLite MAX - Large is about the size of the classic 110, and the Folding BuckLite MAX Medium is about the size of the (more pocketable, IMHO) 112.

RAT 1 all the way, for the price, close to unbeatable!!!:)
solid, opens with the smoothest of ease and very sturdy!!

I would also suggest the Tenacious. Like it better than the Native as the clip on this knife digs right into my palm. Could never get used to it. I know remove the clip but this is defeating the purpose, to me.

Lots of good Kershaws to choose from, as well as the Bryd line from Spyderco.

I have a few "high end" knives, and still carry a few $30 knives :)

Case med stockman (yella CV should be close to $30 if you look hard enough)
Case CV Soddie Jr
Lots of SAKs to choose from (I think everyone needs a SuperTinker, it's easy to find (Wally world ;) ) )

You can get a good knife for $30, jus a matter of what your looking for

You should be able to find a Spyderco Persistence - the slightly smaller version of the Tenacious - for around $38-30. If not, have him take a look at the Byrd line, especially the Cara Cara with the G-10 handle.

Other good ones include the Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter and the Kershaw OD-1.

I would definitely recommend the Rat 1 and it can be had for under $30 shipped in the dealer section.

The Buck Vantage line is very nice. Graceful lines, fast opening, and a useful grind and blade shape.
