folder for a survival kit

Wellywasp, check out abetterworld.co.uk I deal with a chap called Graeme, always really helpful, has great prices & so far Ive had products from Cold Steel, Maxpedition, Becker etc from him, often at hugely cheaper prices than Heinnies, Weaponsgalore, or BKCG.

I would increase the size up to an Endura at least, this gives you enough chopping ability to cut green boughs and smaller sticks, this makes a *massive* difference in making a shelter, building a fire, etc. .

What's it mean...get screwed by a custom?

Shane

P.S. Good thread...good questions...Seems like there should be a million good choices...

wow I thought this thread was long dead, all of these answers dont make things much easier :D I already have a vic trailmaster which i will use when i go camping next week, from there i will decide how well the trailmaster preforms under the conditions and if anything would suit me better. StuToffee www.abetterworld.co.uk is a fantastic site i cant belive i never found it before thanks very much. 'What's it mean...get screwed by a custom?' is a term us Brits use to describe when HM customs take your shiny new knife or open it up and charge you a fee for the privilage.
thanks for the replies everyone

Customs can seize knives at borders, Canada has issues with inertial openings so most folders can be taken by the inspectors if they want. The UK also has regulations on blade length and locks.

Youre welcome, Wellywasp, dont know how I found the abetterworld.co.uk site but its superb. I looked at an Emerson on there & he was £60 cheaper than Heinnies!! You have to wait a little longer as a rule, but I dont mind waiting to save 30% off the price.

I have a SERE 2000 in my Belt Pouch Kit, This is a great folder for Survival Stuff, Carves wood very well and you can skin game with it also.

thats a good idea but they wont all fit in the kit. the Doug Ritter RSK Mk1 looks just about perfect and not to pricey that it cant be replaced. having trouble finding many quality knives here in the u.k there is far to much ninja stuff on army surplus sites, its about time we had a good inexpensive place to buy equipment.
Rob

I have both size Ritter RSK's and they have been all I could have expected. The S30V blade steel is tremendous. Even after some significant useage in a warehouse / camp setting, mine have only needed touchups to come back to a shaving edge. I have no problem with the FRN handle material as long as I don't have really oily / greasy hands. It's not the tackiest handle material (G-10 would suit me better), but it does keep the cost down. They are available from Benchmade or from Aeromedix.

Cliff,
I have a Benchmade folder (800 I think). Anyway, the liner separator that straddles the lanyard hole cracked in half.

(Sorry about the poor quality picture).
I contacted Benchmade about ordering the separator and they said they won't sell it to me and that I have to send the knife in instead, which I don't want to do, anyway, but if I did, does your statement above mean that when it is sent back, it could be confiscated because it definitely can be opened by inertia?

:) Doc :)

Yes the knife can be seized by customs, if it comes from Benchmade and it is obvious by looking at the box it is a commercial item it is very likely to be inspected because a duty will be assigned to it. Unless they take care to make it clear this is a return you can get hit for full duty on the price of the knife again. Assuming it gets examined, the probability of it getting taken depends entirely on the examiner. I have had dozens of them examined and none of them taken. However multiple reports have been noted on the forums of knives lost. As a basic precaution you can ask for the pivot screw to be tightened to maximum.

DOC-CANADA: I took the same chance last summer with a 800 as well having G-10 threading problems. Took about 5 weeks. The pivot was tighened as I requested. Also, it came in a non-descript box and the sender info was simply left as "BKC", content "sporting goods". It wasn't checked. My point is that Benchmade will be as helpful as they can on their end.

Not to unhijack the thread, but the U.S. Mil-K knives make great kit knives. Stainless from stem to stern, inexpensive, easy to find, and built like a tank. Kingston, Ulster, Imperial, Schrade, Camillus and half a dozen more makers have produced them since the late 1940's. No, they are not sexy, and don't have exotic names (though you could call yours "Babaloo" if you wished). I keep them stashed here and there, and don't panic if one is not where I remembered leaving it, I just go get the next one.

Great advice guys, I went to a outdoors shop today and I fell in love with a Vic huntsman which I have named Babaloo and given a strange paint effect. just got a couple more things to add to the kit now and its done; fishing kit para cord etc etc ill try get a photo up

Rob

actually come to think of it, its become more of a bag to put tools in now, I doubt itll be much use in a survival situation :p
