Folder for an infantry solider?

If you really plan to use a knife in the field over there, don't get any kind of combat tacticlol knife. No tanto points, no blacked-out blades. A satin-finished, bare-steel blade with a normal drop or clip point belly, 3" - 4" is your best friend. And a cheap one, too. Why? Because if you ever use a knife over there to save yourself or someone else's life, it will be to cut a seat belt or cut burning plastic cords/straps off someone's body. You don't need an Emerson for that. In fact, you'd be better served with a cheap, one-hand open folder like the Ka-bar Dozier folding hunter (thumbstud model). Plus the best thing that an Emerson does for the average soldier is get itself stolen. If you want something nicer than a Ka-bar folder, I agree with all of the above Spyderco recommendations.

Thanks for all the advice I'm going to the hinderer!

Although you've decided on the Hinderer, I'd recommend a Victorinox Alox Farmer (or Pioneer) for the excellent utility value. If the folder needs to be a locking one-hander, I'd go with an Ontario RAT-1. Solid knife and very affordable/easily replaceable.

Im not infantry, but i just ordered a BM551

you should look into striders or ZTs, folk here on the forum (most in this very thread) were suggesting them to me but a knife like these would probably suite you better

Was Infantry, spent 22 years looking for that "right" knife. Fixed didn't cut it, no real need, and a command climate that restricts them. Expensive folder, nope, they get stolen, borrowed, or lost. Keep them at home where you can and will enjoy them. In the field, at best, you get to see them destroyed. People will use them for stupid things they should have gotten a screwdriver for.

#1 best soldiers knife, a Swiss Army, choose the tools, but even if it doesn't work out, they aren't expensive - get another. Keep it in your shave kit. Get one with scissors for personal grooming.
#2 cutting tool, a pair of EMT shears. Cheap and when people ask for a knife, you get to hear them say, "that won't tighten screws." Now you know what the idiot really wanted.
#3 a good 3 1/2" folder from the PX. If they sell it, then you will find it's affordable, the command climate isn't restrictive, and the price is right.
#4 a multitool from the PX. Do they issue Gerbers, yes, and you sign for them. They aren't handed out like candy, tho. Most issue knives are MOS related, not freebies to any Joe. If it's yours, and a civilian version, no big deal. If it's issue, even if you bought it, it's subject to seizure as Army property, just go ahead and prove otherwise. It might not be worth complaining that far up the chain.

The reality is that knives aren't really needed much day to day in the military. Most of the Army is support, not combat arms, as time goes by and the mission changes, there is a command concern that stupid things are done with them outside the mess hall. Hard to disprove by the testosterone laced atmosphere in the barracks, too.

Enjoy your knife, but don't show it off, most aren't knowledgeable enough to appreciate why the money was spent.

emerson cqc-7 or any emerson model really, If you can find a strider for 300 I would jump on that, Or yea since your active duty I would spend 385.00 for a Hinderer, hell buy 2 hinderers and you can sell one for 700-800 bucks and there you go you got yourself a free knife.

These are all good suggestions he has.
Strider SMF or Sng, or Emerson CQC7; the Hinderer is a good solution, since you can buy it for 1/2 price, compared to the rest of us.

I can only answer your question with another question:

Do you foresee yourself needing to stab a knife into the wall of a demolished building in order to use it as a step to climb out?

Or use it to quickly dispatch 3 dogs on bikes?
