i've been checking around for a folder for self-defense... but most seem pretty expensive to me... emerson commander is $170, bm 710 is $130, sifu is $140, spyderco civilian is $150... guess what i'm looking for is a strong knife that will be quick to pull and unfold.. i like the intimidation looks of the sifu and civilian... any others that i've missed?

(i've also considered carrying a fixed blade with handemade carrying system, but right now it's too much a hassle to find one, waiting time, custom made, expensive etc...)

how about the kershaw ken onion whirlwind? would that work? it's "only" $60...

any input appreciated!

You can get a Spyderco Endura for $40 - 45. Good sized blade that could also be used for self defense

Boker Brend is a good knife for defensive purposes. Can get one for 80 bucks around here.

I second the "vote" for a CRKT "Kasper Fighting Folder".

This is a VERY GOOD folder "for the money"..

(I just bought a "used" one [Large, part-serrated blade] from a fellow "Formuite" for $30, including shipping.

Hell go to Home Depot and get yourself a folding pruning saw.About 20" open and if you like serrations this baby is made for you.Retails for about 8 bucks how can you beat that.

I think if your life is depending on a tool, money shouldn't be an option. I carry an MOD Trident Auto. Although the CRKT KFF is a good knife.

Why not a 10ga? Just the cartridge is scary, let alone the weapon that fires it!

On topic, I don't like folders for self-defense, but if I had to carry productions folders for that purpose (I often do, unfortunately), I would pair up a BM705 and 730. Of course, I know how to work with two knives, so that's important; if you don't, having two knives in the open is not a good idea. But the BM730 makes a nice self-defense knife due to the contoured grip and the blade shape.

What or who will you be defending against?
If it's just a guy in jeans and t-shirt or light jacket, then about any production knife will do.
I would advise at least a 3" locking blade that you can open easily with one hand. I don't own one yet but the Camillus CUDA looks fine to me.
It does'nt have to cost a fortune either; as my Dad always said "you don't want to hang your best knife in some guy, it'll probably end up in the evidence room forever".

What are other affordable defensive folding knives? I really disappointed by the fact that there are so few quality large (over 4") folders in the market. There are so many great folders under 4".

I second the Endura vote. Can't get any better and it's ambidextrious, and if practiced with, as fast as an auto.

For big folders, the biggset one I've seen is a spanish one, 10" blade. For the record, I would also look into coldsteels mega-folders like the XXL voyager and the Vaquero. Rather big things and I think good enough to scare somone away.

So, in order:
1. Endura - good working tool too.
2. Coldsteel vaquero. Big and mean.
3. Coldsteel Voyager. Also big and mean.

Why not post the same questions at the tactics forum?

I'm sure Bram will have many good advises for you.

The best one I can give you is - no matter what knife - learn and practice how to use it. The best tool will not do the job - if you don't do your part.

The "folding" (break-action) shotgun has a high intimidation factor.

The folding knife gets you fewer funny looks when you walk around in public with one in your pocket, and it's a lot handier when you want to open a package or slice something edible.
