folder for self-defense

You mean you don't open your packages with a shotgun? That's my new knife test: open the package containing the new knife with a shotgun, if the knife survives, it passed the test

Only problem is when I forget and load up a slug instead of shot...

A good defensive knife under $200 is more realistic. Under $100 you can still find some good stuff but you are limiting yourself. The BM AFCK was made for this purpose, also there is no knife faster than the Emerson Commander with the wave feature.

Spyderco makes some very fine knives but for defense you want a easy obtainable and fast deployable knife my choice Emmerson Commander.

Au, contraire! I've been playing with opening non-Wave folders by causing the thumbstud to catch on the edge of my pocket (only applies to knives with dual studs), and it would seem that this is just as fast as the Wave. Takes a lot of getting sued to, and I'm still practising, but it seems to work well so far.

The CRKT Kasper is a great knife (a bit heavy though IMO). An AFCK would work great as well, fully serrated black blade if you want it to look even scarier. The Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is also big and scary looking, and might be a bit cheaper. There's a thread somewhere on the scariest looking folder with some great pics, probably expensive though. Whatever you buy, get a lot of practice if not training with it. Good luck.

Entrenching tool. Cheaper than folding pruning saw (although that was a good idea, Strider), and better reach.

As for the hassle to find one, expense, waiting time, these should not be a problem; but even if they were, how much is your life worth? Walt

My life is worth a lot, that's why there's no time to sit around and wait for a knife to finish, from what I know, I might need a knife tomorrow!

Chariot, you don't say where in the USA you live, but if the Sifu is legal where you live, that is the ONLY choice for a defensive knife. It is 5.4" of mean recurved blade, the strongest lock made, and the hilt has several possible grips designed into it. You don't have to believe me, go check out the REKAT forum under Makers & Manufacturers. Look especialy for posts by Jim March, who was instrumental in the design of the knife.

thanks will do that, my only concern is that it will be TOO big and because of that left at home...

...and don't forget to spend a few $$ on knife-fighting training. Or at least a JKD instructional tape.

Just remember: the other guy might be packing a shank too; a bigger, sharper one!

another knife to look at would be something in the CRKT M16 line. i have an M16-14 and that has a 4" tonto blade that can be flicked out extreemly fast using the 'carson flipper'.

Aahhh the Carson flipper. Many a times that got me out of huge jams with my ongoing Sunday morning pancake battles. Gotta clean it fast though before the maple syrup sets.
