I am looking at upgrading my BM551 half serrated blade to a full straight blade folder. I cut mainly ropes at work, some plastic and of course opening boxes, etc. EDC carry type of cutting.

I am looking at 4 knives:
BM710
Spyderco Millie
Al Mar SERE 2000
Sebenza 21

Obviously three of them are in the same price range of around $150. The Sebenza would be the top pick to me from what I have read about the fit, finish, quality, blade materials, and great people to deal with.

You're right, lets add that one to the list, and compare.

FYI.........I am not a huge fan of Spyderco's over the top designs, but this one, and the Millie catch my eye. i like plain, classic designs if you couldn't tell.

Big fan of Benchmades and Spyderco's, and I love the crap outta my Al Mar SERE 2000.

For a work knife I don't know if I'd go with a knife as expensive / nice as a Sebenza... but if you can afford it then I've heard they are pretty amazing.

Sebenza would be the wish list knife. The others are the real contenders.........

Do you guys feel the hollow grind of the Bradley would out cut the others?

I usually prefer flat or convexed grinds..... but I do trust spyderco to make awesome knives.

Not trying to start a "whats the best grind thread"

Yes it will out cut all the others easy due to the M4 steel and the GB is a very good cutter.

Thanks, my pocket is always searching for its next companion and this knife seem really nice. I'd love to try that M4.... have heard nothing but praises about it so far.

Just remember M4 is not stainless. ;)

Next choice would be The Military in S30V, it's a great cutter, lots of belly on that blade.

The other part of the equation is that I sharpen using a GATCO and am not overly familiar with sharpening in any other way than a Vgrind that the GATCO easily produces.

Will these different grinds be hard to maintain with the system i use?

Never used that system so I couldn't say.

The edge of each will be a V grind so your sharpener should work for each. The only hard part can be clamping the blade if there is not a flat spot on the blade. Might want to look at the Paramilitary as it is more pocket friendly and you don't give up much blade length to the Military. If you like the AXIS lock check out the Rift. It is my all time favorite knife and there has been one in my front right pocket since they came out and I got my first one. I have to carry 2 or 3 knives just so my other knives get some pocket time.

How will the GB compare to the Al Mar? Those are the two front runners right now. And of course the Sebenza

The grind on the GB is probably a little bit taller so it most likely will have a little bit better slicing geometry.

That does not mean the Al Mar isn't a mean slicer though. It is without a doubt one of my favorite EDC's ever. I really really like the VG-10 steel. The Al Mar definitely has better penetrating capabilities. Here is an example when that came in very handy for me.

I was camping this past summer with some friends and we forgot a corkscrew for a bottle of wine. I had lots of knives with me.... lots. After searching for opening options I had an idea. I was able to push the SERE deep into the cork and while twisting and pulling was able to get it out. The SERE was the only knife I had with me that had a blade shape that was able to get deep enough into it. I also trusted the lock to not fail.... it has very secure lock up.

I just don't have any experience with the GB, YET, so I don't have any stories about it.

Its looking more and more like the GB will be with me soon. I cant afford the Sebenza I want right now with Xmas just a few weeks away. The other Spydies aren't doing it for me, and the 710 is just too long for my liking. That leaves the SERE and the GB.......and the more I read the more I am being convinced that the GB blade design is the best for my needs.

I've used all of those except the 710. Considering just the ones you mentioned, I would prefer the Millie for it's light weight and outstanding cutting performance.

Ankerson and FlaMtnBkr have made a couple of good suggestions if you want to throw a few others in the mix to consider. I carry both a Rift and a GB from time to time and they are outstanding cutters with a bit of weight to back up their cutting performance. They both feel very solid and capable. I wouldn't hesitate to have either one as my only knife in a tough situation.

Anyone in MA/NH area with any or all of these knives? I would love to handle them before buying them, but no dealer stocks them. I am especially interested in the GB and 2000.

How about upcoming knife shows?
