Folder on a clip: point up or down?

As long as it is not a flipper, the chance for a knife open by itself in the pocket is slim.

Usually tip down for me. If a knife is tip up only, it isn't a deal breaker for me.

Although I'm not real picky about tip up vs tip down, I appreciate Spyderco and their 4 way pocket clips on the Delica, Endela, and Endura which constitute a big chunk of my carry time (along with CS).

You wearing tight trousers, aren't you ? A pocket cannot better a poorly conceived knife. I mean, I love Piemont lever folders and higonokamis, but I treat them with the deserved mistrust they earn on "staying closed".

I say point down, just in case, as I have had a point up slightly open and cut me as I reached in the pocket for it.

Somewhere right now is a guy in a hospital bed with a bandaged groin screaming at the fluorescent lights, "I should have carried tip down!".
I'm sure there's porn stars out there that this scenario could happen to, but I can't think of any way for a tip up knife to injure your groin if it's clipped with the blade against the seam.

I personally put rubber bands around all my knives to prevent them from opening in my pocket. If there are no rubber bands handy, I won't leave the house. I'll just sit in the corner frantically breathing into a paper bag.
Zip tie them closed to be extra sure. Safety first!

I can't depend on my pants to do anything right, much less keep my knife closed for me.

I believe that Hulk's pants should be purple. Where is Banner getting all these purple pants?

Dang, I had the best Hulk toy when I was a kid. Not one of the little Mego figures, but a real monster toy, with white fabric shirt and purple pants.

I'm not sure what the pros and cons are...if any?

None.

Or just personal preference?

Yes.

Is there a non-preference reason why one would be better than the other?

No.

That said…

Most of my knives are tip-uppers, some tip-downers. The only one that’s ever hurt me was a Benchmade-Emerson, tip-upper, that opened in a pocket to give me a wee poke-n-slice when I put my hand in my pocket. It has a weak detent. As long as the knives you carry stay shut in your pockets, it really doesn’t matter in which orientation you carry it. At least not in my experience. Then again, I don’t have any flippers.

Oh, and there’s this: One of my knives has a Demko thumb plate on it (similar to an Emerson wave) that wouldn’t work to snap the knife open upon the draw if it were tip-downer.

As always, YMMV.

Nope, just regular dress pants for work, jeans and shorts.

When it's against the seam, there's really no room for the blade to open* much less cut you as your hand naturally rides against the back of the handle.

My brother recently gave a knife to a friend and they clipped it (right hand tip up) to the middle of their pocket. That would definitely cause some issues if the blade opened up and it would also have been annoying as it blocks your pocket. It was immediately corrected.

*Not counting gym/basketball shorts or stuff made from very light or flimsy material. I have had a tip up knife open up in gym shorts. It was an Emerson and I was going for a run. A perfect loosey goosey storm.

I just checked and every one of my knives with clips are oriented tip up blade opening to the rear if worn in right front pocket. As benchwarmer380 says, carry the knife closest to the back seam of the pocket so it's out of the way. Don't / can't see how that carry can ever cut you in the pocket or getting the knife out.

Edit: I own zero flippers, waved, auto or OTF knives. I do own a BM Violi and a BM Barrage and they are AO. Both have a good positive detent and require a good movement on the thumb stud to start the action. So factor that in.

This is it, no pocket clip but in slip with bolster down , point up. So that’s why said point down, in slip 😅 I had a friend shave the tang to make point sit lower tha n handle. I may be on tangent. My bad it says folder with a clip, I thought it was folder in a slip😊
