Folder pocket carry, blade half open?

Is there a safe way to carry a folder in your pocket with the blade half open at 90 degrees to the handle? I'd like to be able to keep my fingers wrapped around the handle and have the sheath or whatever tug the blade open as I draw the knife out of my pocket. I'm just worried that I'll fall on it or something and get my fingers sheared off.

If you are carrying it in your right pocket, slit the insides of your pocket on the left. If you carry it in your left pocket, slit the inside of the pocket on the right. This will allow room for the half-open blade to poke through...Then, to deploy it, pull it out of your pocket as fast as you can. The partially opened blade will surely snag on SOMETHING, and open the rest of the way.

If I remember correctly their is someone on BF that makes sheaths that open the blade as you pull the knife out. May want to do a search or start a new topic about it. The whole thing about keeping a knife half open in your pocket doesnt sound like such a good idea to me and I wouldnt be surprised if you end up injured. May want to look into a better solution such as a knife with the Emerson wave or one of those quick deployment sheaths.

No. There are gimicks like the quick draw sheath or the CRKT Merlin but carrying a half open knife is probably unsafe, likely illegal, and in some cases damaging to the knife. Your better bet is to get a knife with an Emerson Wave or get a fixed blade with a sturdy sheath.

When I was a young street guy, 40 years ago, I used to carry my knife tip up. I would take a paper match and slide it under the blade to the extent necessary to cause the blades tip to catch on my pants pocket when drawn. The result was I would draw an open knife....but you didn't hear it here. Nobody had ever heard of a wave then. Of course this wasn't for play time. Pants were too expensive.

Sounds like someone is itching to loose the family jewels plus poke a hole in something else by carrying at 90 deg. Snagging a blade that has been correctly sharpened could very easily result in some pants cut open. I saw a person a few years ago that did the snagging on the pocket thing as described above and the blade opened part of the way. It opened the rest of the way when it came in contact with the belly just above the belt. The result was a cut into the abdominal cavity.

I cant tell you how much your question makes me cringe , I hope your E.R. bill isn't too high...

i have a hard time believing that this is a real question.

but thats just me.
i apologize if it is an authentic question.

just get a fixed blade.

If I did this with ANY of my knives I'd have a hole in my crotch 3 inches wide in the first week. I completely agree with the above statements about checking out Emerson Waves, or possibly even something like the Cold Steel Ti-Lite.

On a side note, I mis-fired my Benchmade Apparition the other day opening it a little too fast out of my pocket and it put a 2 inch hole in my jeans and actually cut my underwear but left me unscathed. Putting it in my pocket open would be a death sentence.

Why in the hell would you want to have a blade half open in you pocket? With the advent of folders these days most of them open as quickly as an auto or just go with a fixed blade.

I don't see why you guys are being so negative about this. The blade would be in a sheath, just like a fixed blade would be. The only difference is that the handle would be able to "bend" to the side so that the knife could fit into a smaller space. Drawing would cause the sheath to pivot, which would fully open the blade. That's what I meant by "tug". I hope you didn't think I was talking about snagging the tip on on my pants.

The main danger I can see would be from the shearing action if the blade were to be forced closed. The leverage advantage might allow the blade to cut right through the sheath material, especially from an impact like a fall. Maybe it would need a piece of steel sewn in as a guard.

I checked out the links that hardheart posted and those are better alternatives to the OP question than trying to retrofit a knife that is not design to rapid deploy. Getting a knife system that is already designed that way is much better and safer.

I cringed too. I thought this couldn't possibly be a serious question. You are asking for loads of trouble if you seriously intend to carry a knife that way, in my opinion.
Why don't you just get a fixed blade? Or get a Mercharness or some other shoulder harness for your folder.

besides making sure that your insurance is upto date and having a good seamstress for repairs ;) I would also check local laws. In California concealing an "opened" folding knife is a felony. It's possible that the local police and DA may view it as a Weapon.

The problem is that most carry methods will either print badly or be slow/clumsy to access in the clothes that I wear. Pocket carry would be ideal for me, but most fixed blades and opened folders are too long to fit. However, a half-open folder fits perfectly. Since I don't really want to cut holes in all my pockets or buy an entirely new wardrobe, this would be a very attractive carry method for me *if* I could do it safely.

I've considered getting a small fixed blade like the Woodswalker, and that may be the route I end up taking. I still have yet to try a Wave knife.

I'm curious about the Merlin Pro. It has the kind of draw that I was thinking about. Could it be used inside a pocket? I guess it would need to be attached to the fabric somehow.

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out. Also, thanks for the info about California law. I didn't know that. I don't live there, but I may visit some day.

And the answer is...

Uhhhh, learn to fight?

A wiseman once said to be trained or be chained. - In this case chained to a tool. And that simply will not do.

No quickdraw will ever beat a quick strike to the throat given close enough range. Learn to defend yourself - and to do it with whatever comes to hand and you will not have to walk in fear.

The knife is just a tool. Develop proper awareness & you should be able to secure it when you need it - or create sufficient distance to do so.

...Beats the hell out of trying to go around 'half cocked' all the time :D

Hey Guys....

I as well don't like the idea of a half open blade in a sheath..

Theres no point to it..

If your going to do that, you may as well carry a fixed blade...

A deployment system on the other hand is completely another story in itself...

The Speed Dialer for the new Spyderco Waved Endura and Delica is in my opinion one of the best ways besides pocket carry for these particular knives...

The Speed Dialer teamed up with the Mercharness, allow many different types of draws while using the system.

You can read more about them here:

www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/speeddialers.htm

The Knives are held firmly in place, although allow for a crisp, clean and quick one handed deployment, from a strong arm, cross draw, left, right, both in forward and reverse grip.
The speed Dialer also allows the knife to be drawn quickly from a seated position, and will also carry IWB via a static line...

Please feel free to drop me a note if you have any questions...

BTW..

I also Agree with JGD..

Nothing Beats proper training...
