No one is going to bash AUS 6. It's an older stainless, very corrosion-resistant, but it doesn't hold an edge as well as many newer steels.

However. "stay away from expensive high carbon steels, as most are more prone to break under extreme use conditions" This sounds exactly wrong. Non-stainless, traditional, high-carbon steels are still used because despite their greater tendency to rust if not carefully maintained, they take and hold an excellent edge, and stand up to physical abuse better than most stainless.
