Done a little reading in the past about steels and was wondering what you would recommend and why.
I’ve been carrying a Benchmade Mini Grip in 154CM but would like something else to put into rotation.
I know theres a folder in D3V in the future, but until then, what steel would you prefer.

Would post something in General, but there’s a bit of knowledge in here and not as much riffraff 😁

Thanks

Are you looking for a big folder or little folder?

I'll echo what others have said, and my statements are based largely off of Spyderco knives, and light to medium use, FWIW.

I really, really like CruWear. Even I can get that pretty sharp. Don't seem to have any corrosion issues that are warned about.

Magnacut is great as well. No fuss steel. Just works well.

S90V seems to go along time between sharpening for me.

On the smaller side for now.
The MiniGrip is lightweight and doesn’t pull on gym shorts and don’t notice at all with jeans.

I am currently really liking CRK's Magnacut in a L31 sebenza I picked up. For me, the Achilles heel of CRK was their S35vn and they have done a really good job now, with Magnacut.

Another favorite is a K390 Spyderco PM2. That stuff just takes the abuse!

I’ve heard they are now taking in 21s for magnacut reblades. I’ve been on the fence, lead times seem pretty long.

Random question:

What makes a steel a "folder steel"?

Bias towards wear resistance over toughness and highly stainless?

I like hard and thin with good edge stability at narrow angles.

4V would be pretty tits, except it rusts 😞

Magnacut works pretty good, although some manufacturers struggle with the low tempering temperature and burn it grinding the primaries and sharpening.

I'm a sucker for good D2

This!

And the ability to hold a fine edge, and quickly strop back the fine edge

also enough toughness (not sure if this is the correct term) to not be overly chippy

I cut thin paper, thin plastic sheeting and foam half my day at work... any heavier cuts i use a CPK
