Folder Steel

You don't really need 3V unless you are planning on abusing the folder. CruWear and Magnacut are good choices if you want easy to sharpen.

Honestly, Delta 3V has edge durability that I would really like to have in the folders I carry. It is so frustrating to sharpen a knife and have the edge visible a day later because it contacted something somewhere slightly weird and smushed. I personally cannot wait to have a Delta 3V folder.

And it touches up very easily!

I have some Benchmades, and while I really like them, the weak point has always been edge holding and sharpening when it comes to my experience with 154CM bladed ones.
There are a couple of Bokers I have which are made from D2- not high end knives by any means- that are as good as anything else I've experienced in small knife.
D3V is definitely a well rounded, appropriate option for a folder which has- for me at least- exhibited surprisingly good corrosion resistance, easy sharpening and really good edge holding

what do you think about CPM D2?

I didn't like their particle version of it as well as their regular version of it. The cost difference was minimal. I speculate that the smaller rounded carbides behave differently than the large plate-like carbides that D2 is known for. That toothy edge does well in hide and meat, and seems to stay sharp longer.

Heat treated poorly, it takes a lousy edge and holds it forever.

Heat treated optimally, it has workable edge stability, decent corrosion resistance, and good edge retention

As a fellow fanatic and owner of one of Mark's D3V folders, I will say that if the first CPK released is not D3V it will be an extreme miscarriage of justice.

Yeah there are other meritorious steel choices and future flavors are certainly welcome, especially small batch semi-exotics, but a CPK folder with no D3V is like watching 1970's Dolly Parton on TV for her music.

I’ll start by saying I like CRK and carry one most of the time that I carry a folder. But, I do have some in S45vn that seem to be rather chippy. Maybe I am using them a little rougher than some, but nothing that I would classify as abuse, or outside of what I would expect a large locking folder to handle. Do you have any experience with the S45vn? Do you think it was too hard or soft? Is this the nature of S45vn? I don’t have any from other brands to compare it to. Do you think Magnacut would be better or am I expecting too much from something that has such geometry?
