folder with a bottle opener

Aloha fellow BF members, it's been a while since I posted but I'm again in need of your collective expertise. I want to get a knife for a buddy of mine but one thing I'm looking for is that it should have a bottle opener on it. Everytime he comes over he asks for a bottle opener and I'm someone that will pop the top off with anything that's handy (handle of a butter knife, handle of my EDC, screwdriver, etc.). He hasn't learned that one yet but enjoys a good brew regularly and as he works as an electrician he could use a reliable edc for cutting strapping, boxes, etc. I thought about getting him a becker necker but I think a folder would be better for him. I don't need a knife with a super steel like s30v just something decent that is tough, holds a decent edge, and is easy to sharpen. Think 420HC and up. I know he appreciates good cuttlery as I've given him some kitchen knives in the past that he loves (electrician by trade but a chef at heart).

I think a knife will make a great gift while my wife thinks I'm just looking for another excuse to buy knives. Can anyone help me out? Would like to know if anyone has found or handled anything like what I'm looking for.

Thanks.

I would consider bying him a Alox SAK victorinox electrisian. I have 2. A engraved one my wife gave me at the wedding and a hardbeeter I carry around to test how bed You can treat a SAK. It has done some rough things in bad environments but holds up just fine. Has a new 100 grit sandpaper finish now as it was geting realy ugly.

dePaul, I'll check on EKA knives as I'm not familiar with the brand and who brings them in for sale. I'm currently looking at SAK One hand Trekker, it's got a locking blade that you can open with one hand. I'm also looking at Buck's Redpoint, small and simple with only a blade and bottle opener, haven't found one with just a plain edge versus the combo edge. Anything else I should be considering?

What about a waved Delica or Endura? Also, for the money a LM Skeletool can't be beat. The caribiner/bottle opener is one of the best I have used.

How about this one? Leatherman Expanse...

* Blade Length: 6.6cm
* 154CM Stainless Steel blade
* Straight/Serrated Combo Blade
* Glass fibre reinforced nylon handles
* Stainless Steel reinforcement
* Blade Launcher
* Liner Lock
* Thumb Stud
* Removable pocket clip
* Carabiner/bottle opener

Some models even has driver bits... Might come in handy on the job.

The Kershaw ET makes a good bottle opener. Don't be put off by its strange looks, the ET is actually a good, practical knife.

Victorinox Cadet. Cheap, light and very handy. I carry mine with a full-sized knife as my EDC.

The Cadet is a good choice because it is cheap and a slip joint. Your friend will understand that the knife is a tool (like the bottle opener, nail file and can opener) and will handle the knife with a bit more care and thought. Additionally, the full flat grind of the Cadet makes it an excellent slicer and it holds an edge for a good amount of time.

If he still wants a dedicated knife, look into Spyderco's offerings. :thumbup:

The EKA SAKs are made by Wenger.

There's also the Mantis Churchkey. The company itself is questionable and the steel is subpar, but for a full size bottle opener it would be a good choice.

Can't go wrong with a SAK. It's hard to find a better deal on so many tools that fit into such a tiny package. If anything, it'll teach proper safety measures for handling slip joint knives.

Leatherman makes some good folders with addtional tools on them Also, there is the Vic OHT.

Based on what you described, I'd suggest a waved Delica. It opens bottles, the wave feature is cool and not being a knife AFI, he may be surprised and delighted by it. Plus, he works in a field where he could carry and use it every day without scaring people.

I have that Leatherman pictured above, it's a sweet little knife, 154CM steel, Phillips & flat drivers, flipper works great. Also have the ET, also a great knife. If you have the budget for it get the ET.

Buck Redpoint for about $20 is what I would go with. One handed opener, locks opened and closed, and a dedicated bottle opener. I think your buddy would love it! If he's not yet a knife nut it will probably be one of the coolest knives has has seen, IMO.
