thumbs up for the japanese horihori knife, have been looked at them at lee valley.
In pest control I am always doing minor landscape/pruning etc and keep a trowel sharpened on both sides with a file in the truck.
Any knife you put to your tasks is going to fail or be frequently sharpened.
 
I decided to get a composite kershaw leek in cpm d2. I've always liked d2 ever since my d2 queen sodbuster, as it will definitely hold an edge and its stainless enough. Plus kershaw > everything else IMO (accept spyderco).

As for digging in soil, the blade only went in an inch or 3 and it was accidental. I usually don't cut that low to the ground, but I want a knife that can handle it if I do.
