Folders- A Thing of the Past?

Gotta say, I am not only addicted to my new 5, but to this sub-forum.

This ESEE 5 is my first REAL full tang knife. Previously, I had only bought folders and was actually looking at getting a Benchmade of some sort.

After reading numerous threads on full tang vs. folders, I am 100% sold on full tang- all the time. To me, it just sounds like and makes sense that they would and should last longer, or take more of a beating than a folder.

What would you guys do? Get a good folder or stick with all full tang, even when it comes to the smaller fixed blades like HEST and ESEE 3?

Sorry for the short story long. :D

well, since I live in a state where it's illegal to concealed carry any fixed blade, and open carry of a sheath knife can and will get you refused entry in a lot of buildings, I'm not likely to stop EDCing my folders any time soon.
(and yes, I find it more than slightly ignorant that it's OK for me to carry a 1911 concealed, but not an Izula)
even on my own property when carrying a fixed blade I still have a couple of folders in my pockets for versatility's sake.

Full tang is a nice feature but not necessary for a completely viable knife. I also am 100% sold on fixed knives over folders-there are just way too many limitations in design and intended use that overshadow the compact convenience. I have absolutely no trouble EDCing fixies, and you'll find that there are PLENTY of great EDC fixie designs out there, both manufactured and handmade. Obviously the ESEE knives are tip top, but I'd also check out the Buck Paklite Skinner, the RKK Snitch, Blind Horse Tiger Knapp and Koyote EDC. Welcome to the world of fixed blades, you'll never have the need to go back to folders again.

I'm making the transition to a fixed-blade EDC, which will be the HEST. Now allI need to do is figure out placement along with my Glock 26. Maybe the knife will be SOB?

Fixed blades do tend to be more stout than folders. But its kind of comparing apples to oranges if you ask me.

I would love to be able to carry my RC6 all day every day but most of us don't live lives where this is acceptable. I have a small 3" Koyote Kustom that I like to carry now and then. It is definitely not tactical looking, with it's walnut handle slabs and traditional style leather sheath. But I still get funny looks/comments almost every time that I wear it in public.:jerkit: Sheeple frighten easily.

So I usually carry a Benchmade 804 AFCK or an SAK Spartan when I'm out in world of man. Could I pry open a car door with my pocketknife? Probably not. But the more mundane daily tasks can be accomplished with almost as much ease when using a folder as when using a fixed blade.

Think I wanna stick with the ESEE's for now too. I love the versatility of that freakin' HEST! Definitely gonna take a look at the models you suggested PayetteRucker.

A fixie?

"Sheeple"...LOL! That's awesome. Never heard the sheep referred to as that. Thanks for the input. Makes sense.

Amen to that! California's got that same ridiculous law. And a few more 2nd Amendment-infringing laws that'll have you bangin' your head against a wall, too:confused:

Oh please, if you want to nitpick we can head to Whine and Cheese...
Scott3670, I carry my HEST and RC3 front right pocket, where it sits in such a low profile it's unnoticeable. Ideally I'd have someone make me an in-pocket drop sheath with a pocket clip, so that it rides secure in pocket unnoticed, but I'm broke and the sloppy Kydex does the job for now.

there's a huge thread on w&ss about the pro's & con's of folders vs. fixed blades...i forgot who posted it but this just about sums up how i feel: convenience? get a folder. for just about everything else, get a fixed blade.

if the 5 is your first esee, wait until you get the junglas...it's on a different level than any knife you've ever touched!

maybe he came from the road bike world :) although that whole (bmx) trend of not having brakes and using your shoes as brakes deserves it's own eye rolling from me.

Heck no, Ritchey V brake up front, Shimano XTR U brake in the rear for the mountain bike, Ultegra SL on the road bike

I was born and raised in Kalifornia, and I must say that their gun laws stink (although not as bad as Chicago). Anyway, now that I am living in West Virginia I can carry a fixed-blade knife next to my concealed pistol (Glock 26) and go damn-near anywhere I desire.

even if its perfectly legal, i would still carry folders over fixed blades...they are so much more comfortable to carry and there is nothing that i use EDC knives for where it would require the strength of a fixed blade...but thats just me:D

I'm not sure about carrying it in a front pocket - I'll probably just carry it in the small of my back. Who knows? This will be a work-in-progress.

in my county, i can't conceal a knife with a blade longer than 3", but if the pocket clip on a folder is visible it's not "concealed".

so i could carry an Izula or 3 on my belt, but not a HEST. shirt is untucked to cover the G19 iwb @ 3:00.

my current edc blade is a ZT 200, and previously it's been a Buck/Strider Tarini and a Benchmade AFCK. a folder lets me carry a larger blade, even in most NPEs (AKA: "@ work").

it's simply a matter of choosing the right tool for the job. when i get an Izula, i'll probably edc that too, but it probably won't replace the ZT.

now, no argument that a full tang fixed blade is usually going to be a more rugged knife than a folder, but i've never broken a folder so that's not a major concern.
