Folders- A Thing of the Past?

Just wait until the DPx HEST folder comes out ;)

Heck no, Ritchey V brake up front, Shimano XTR U brake in the rear for the mountain bike, Ultegra SL on the road bike

sweet, a fellow mountain biker! between drinking, bladeforums, & working (in no particular order :D) i somehow managed to squeeze in biking in there. holy crap. talk about bikes that cost way more than my first car! i know who to ask for help now once i start getting into it and start upgrading parts.

I was born and raised in Kalifornia, and I must say that their gun laws stink (although not as bad as Chicago). Anyway, now that I am living in West Virginia I can carry a fixed-blade knife next to my concealed pistol (Glock 26) and go damn-near anywhere I desire.

yup, kalifornia is the worst. new jerseystan is second. too bad i've always wanted to live there up until i started getting interested in guns.

... guess i'm wierd. i carry both daily.

i'd open carry my junglas if my state allowed it :p

Great way to stay in shape, which is also a major contributing factor in wilderness survival. Also a great way to see alot of gorgeous country at a relatively fast pace, without missing 95% like you would in a car...

that's exactly my reasons for getting back into riding! getting in shape plus i learned more about my neighborhood in a few days of riding around than in 10+ yrs of living/driving here. i started noticing long abandoned warehouses, lots, etc. that can serve as a 1-2 day shelter in case of a natural disaster that's hidden away from looters & stuff.

plan a will always be to stay put and just unload the ammo stash i've built up over the years if i need to but it's nice to know i can take off with just a mag or two and have somewhere else to go to ride out the temporary disaster.

Folders- A Thing of the Past?

Never! I currently EDC a Buck Alpha Dorado and a sprint run Spyderco Manix. And every once in a while, they are joined by a Benchmade AFCK.

It's not that I prefer them to fixed blades, but fixed blades are generally just too visible and upsetting to the general public (read: my customers). Of course, so is my Manix, but in those cases, the Buck rules! (2-1/2 blade).

Doc

OK, cutting through all this other chatter and heading straight to the question at hand:
What would you guys do? Get a good folder or stick with all full tang, even when it comes to the smaller fixed blades like HEST and ESEE 3?
the HEST gets my vote. Carries well underneath an untucked shirt, rock solid, and useful. And yeah... I live in a state where I believe carrying a fixed blade for anything other than outdoorsy stuff is illegal. Hey... I'm always headed outdoors. I find the HEST on my belt quite often. In fact, it will probably be on my belt tomorrow during casual Friday.

Plus.... I typically carry a tactical folder as well. And a Victorinox ALOX Soldier. And a couple others. God help me if I ever fall into water deeper than I am tall.

well, since I live in a state where it's illegal to concealed carry any fixed blade, and open carry of a sheath knife can and will get you refused entry in a lot of buildings, I'm not likely to stop EDCing my folders any time soon.
(and yes, I find it more than slightly ignorant that it's OK for me to carry a 1911 concealed, but not an Izula)
even on my own property when carrying a fixed blade I still have a couple of folders in my pockets for versatility's sake.

+1 on all of it

I carry my hest front pocket or iwb. A xl voyager and one or two 4 inch folders. I'd rather not pull a fixed blade out to cut a string around the sheep. I have pulled it out to eat though. Lol

V breaks?? Welcome tothe world of disks man!! You a cross country man?

Folders are a convenience/legality thing for the most part. And they don't scare ppl as much, as it was stated before.
For me it's mostly the scare factor. For some reason if you're over 6'0, wear a leather jacket and pull out a knife, you're instantly billed as the one that escaped from block D together with Q-ball.

Just wait until the DPx HEST folder comes out ;)

When is that, cause I NEED a good EDC knife- now... LOL. Funny, two weeks ago, this wasn't a problem- and i was just looking at an EOD Robotics Breacher Bar. Boy, am I lucky. My wife will be ecstatic!

Sorry- just thinking, being a folder, would it come with the same warranty? I have to admit, this was one of the selling points for me. To me, you guys offering a warranty as such says that you are 100% confident in your product- Therefore, so am I. Thank you.

After reading numerous threads on full tang vs. folders, I am 100% sold on full tang- all the time. To me, it just sounds like and makes sense that they would and should last longer, or take more of a beating than a folder.

If the ability to take a beating were the only criterion for choosing a knife, I'd agree with you. I like my fixed blades full tang as well.
But there is a reason folding knives were invented, and the reasons are more valid today than they ever were. The vast majority of people live in cities and work in office environs. And that pretty much (not totally but close) rules out FB's, even as little as an RC-3/Game Warden type knife.

Folders on the other hand can easily be carried in a pocket, even with a 5" blade.

I'd EDC a fixed blade too if it were possible, and I do when it is. But 90% of the time I carry a folder, out of necessity.
And FYI, I've never felt underpowered with one yet.

I'm able to carry an Izula in my pocket 'round here. I carry it over a folder due to the fact that it's a fixie... and it's just so damn cool

Well i could carry the Izula or HEST, but they both stay in my EDC/BOB/GH Bag and I have a Leatherman or some kind of MT on my belt, a SAK of one sort or another, and a locking folder on me. Today its the Leatherman Blast, a Huntsman SAK and a Kershaw Chive, and a Gerber Ridge.

I doubt the Fixed blade will completely replace my folders ever. Too many places I can't go with a fixed blade on me.

I strongly prefer to carry fixed blades but find that in summer the handle can print alot through light shirts so I went with a zt 0200 in my pocket. What a beast!!!
Its large though. I always have a 4-5 inch fixed in my truck or carry bag that I can get to. When the temps cool off enough I will actually edc my 5 inch camp knives with a t-shirt and an unbuttoned shirt over it and its great.

I have no problem concealing a HEST, ESEE-3, even ESEE-4 under just a t-shirt. In fact, I COULD be concealing a HEST right now.

Many people LOVE their folders.

I have a buddy who was showing off his SOG folder and how stout it was, then we went out to my car and I showed him my RC5 - his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He never had a fixed-blade.

I kept forwarding him links to different threads on this forum and he just ordered a HEST.

People who grew up with buck and case folders are often convinced that this is all they will ever need in a knife... maybe they are right.

We adapt to our tools more often than we think. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

All said, I do wait, with great anticipation, for the HEST folder - it may just replace the Izzy for me. I like the Izzy for it's tenacity, but a folder is much more practical (and able to be explained, or sometimes even legal) than a fixed blade.

I EDC an Izula & LM Wave & SAK Hiker 5 days a week at work

But Again I have carried every ESEE knife in the line up to work as well :D
except for the AH1 ... :p
I prefer Fixed or Folders ;)
