Folders with Most Comfortable Handles

For me the Spyderco Persian and large Wegner set the comfort standard. I don't have one yet, but the Al Mar Nomad is on my Christmas list. :)

I have a Spyderco D'Allara Rescue and have to say that it is pretty comfortable. You might look at the Drop Point version.

Persian, Millitary, and Benchmade AFCK. But those are just my opinion on a purely subjective subject.

Most comfortable folder that I've owned was the Spyderco full size Calypso with micarta handles, you can find one now a days by posting a want to buy or just watching the forsale section but that one has a very nice grip along with an excellent flat grind VG-10 blade that is one good cutter...:)

SOG AutoClip (Full size). It's "plastic" (FRN), but the clip creates a nice palm-fitting swell.

If Zytel (FRN) doesn't count as plastic, then I vote for CRKT's Kasper/Crawford folder. The blade steel sucks, I'm always touching up the edge, but it never rusts and is easy to clean. It's handle seems to fit my hand so perfectly, that I now no longer use my Spyderco's, SOG's, Buck's, etc.

The 'profesional' version has aluminum handle scales and has better steel. I think I'm going to get that next before they discontiue the model.

I'm with Rhino on this one -- recently I've been rediscovering how comfortable the old Buck 110 handle is. He could get a "one-armed bandit" that attaches to the blade for one hand opening if that's important. If he'd want premium steel, I'd advise him to go with Cabela's Alaskan Guide 110 with S30V blade, or look at BG-42 blades available through the Buck Custom Shop at www.buckknives.com.

Life without a clip isn't all that bad.

Your friend really should go to a knife shop and try knives out, as his hands are unique and folders that feel great to some feel like crap to others.

That said, for long and hard use, I'd go with something that has a larger handle (way easier to hang on to and use hard) with a blade and lock suited to that kind of work as well.

Recently I was able to handle both a Spyderco Paramilitary and a Manix. I thought I'd find the Paramilitary to be perfect. However, once holding it I found that the handle is too small for me. It is plenty long, but just the shape fo it is not right for my hand. That surprised me! The Manix, however, was perfectly suited to my hand. Santa knows that I want a plain edge Manix. Hopefully I've been a good boy this year.

With ergonomics, try before you buy is the best way to go! Otherwise, I say Manix.

For me, anything that is smooth and doesn't create hotspots is usually good for prolonged use. Something like an Opinel. Clips can cause blisters sometimes.

I just got a Spydie Lil Temperance trailing point in the mail today, it is the most comfortable folder I have ver held. It displaced my Dodo imediatly! The spydies may look odd, but they are the ergonomic kings!

I'll have to add a vote for the Spyderco Persian and add the Benchmade Presidio to boot. I haven't found anything more comfortable than those two.

Another vote for the Spyderco Manix. As has been stated before, it provides a safe and comfortable grip. I like the size and the flat grind of the blade as well.

A friend of mine is looking for a folder with handles comfortable enough for hard and long use. He doesn't like plastic, but micarta, aluminum, carbon fiber, is fine. His main concern is handle comfort. It must also have a clip and lock.
Doesn't like plastic, eh? OK, how about wood?

I present to you the Timberline Worden Supreme. Two sizes available; the large one (4" blade) is a major fistful, but all curves, not angles. Tip-down carry clip, heavy-gauge stainless steel liners, perfectly-fitted liner lock, aluminum back spacer, stabilized wonewood scales, beautifully polished AUS-8 blade.

I just upgraded from the zytel-handled model, which I've beat the crap out of and it came back for more. Very comfy in hard use, and IMHO a real (and overlooked) bargain!

I can also second many of the others mentioned. I love my Manix, it's got an excellent grip shape, but the edges of the handle could be a bit more rounded for extended hard use. I can recommend the Spyderco Persian, it feels amazing in my hand, but it's not exactly a hard-use knife. If you don't mind a thick grip, the CRKT Hammond Cruiser (liner lock version of the CRKT Cascade above) is extremely comfortable, but very bulky to carry. The Spyderco Native III is one of the best in the 3"-blade class, but I never liked the feel of the original Native. The Benchmade McHenry & Williams 710 doens't look as ergonomic as the Spydies, but to me, it's one of the most comfortable folders I own; the Benchmade 73x Ares are almost as comfy. I haven't had a chance to try a Bump yet...
