they can call it zytel, g10 or whatever. it is all plastic to me. i have the MT LCC and love it. can you all recommend some knives in the 100-200 dollar price range that use non plastics for the handles. thanks in advance.
I believe that Benchmade (BM) just introduced a small axis folder with carbon fiber handles. BM also has a variety of folders with aluminum handles such as the Osborne and the AFO. They also make the Pinnacle which features titanium handles. Finally, I wouldn't overlook the manual version of the Microtech SOCOM Elite with its aluminum handles. Spyderco also offers some of their folders with stainless steel handles. All of these are within your stated price range and there are certainly others that I'm missing. Good luck.
How about the CRKT M16-03? It has aluminum. No rubber inserts either. They also have a Carbon Fiber version. Blades are AUS-8 right now. All for under $100.
Spyderco makes a lot of models with alternative steel handles.
Personally, I'd consider the BM 750 Pinnacle. Similar design to CR Sebenzas, also has thick titanium alloy handles, but is much more affordable.
Regarding synthetic handles: they do offer functional advantages over traditional handles like steel, wood, etc. The Spyderco Native lightweight changed the way I look at Zytel.
you're totally right. zytel has its place. but i can't get over the feeling that the knives are cheap. i have a CS X-Large voyager and it cuts well and it lightweight, but the feel of the handle is cheap. know what i mean.
I don't mind Zytel or polymer handles. They're durable and provide a good grip especially if the handle has some type of texture. If I were to choose a knife for everyday use and not have to be afraid of loosing it, I'd go with a zytel handled lockback like a Spyderco Endura, Spyderco Native or a Benchmade Ascent.
Build yourself your own liner lock for $30. Order some beautiful wood at the same time from Koval or go down to your local fine woodworking place and get a little chunk of something and get it sawed up into thin wafers. This is a very fun experience and for the price you can't beat it.
I have a thing about metal handles. Check out the M16 (aluminum), S2 (titanium), and Navajo (stainless steel), by Columbia River (CRKT). The Kershaw Boa (aluminium) is a great all-purpose blade with a slick assisted opening.
