Is there a small folding stainless or titanium windbreak/cook stove out there that's designed for wood? It gets pretty blustery in my area and I'm having a real hard time finding anything that folds flat.

here are my thoughts on the Pocket Cooker, a small folding wood stove.

it pretty much sits in my gear trunk currently, but i might take it out again this summer and give it another chance...

in the winter though i mostly just use an open fire.

The closest thing I can find is the Magic Flame Stove

At this website
This would be perfect but...I can't find a source to get it from other from their dinosaur of a website. Suggestions?

FortyTwoBlades,

I would suggest looking at this. http://www.nimblewillnomad.com/stove.htm

I have been thinking about asking David from Greatlakes waterjet if he could group cut these to make the price reasonable. If anybody would be interested in this I can ask him to cut maybe 15 or 20. I think it is a perfect solution @ 6oz.

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Somewhere around here I have a sterno windshield. aluminum, with steel brace. I put wire mesh to hold wood and tinder at bottom. flattens, sort of. Really nothing to it.

edit: looks a bit like the magic flame...same concept.

I usually carry a super light weight butane stove when I'm backpacking. However, if I am just going back into the bush for a few miles I don't mind taking a small wood burning stove.

A converted aluminum Sterno stove that folds flat. Very inexpensive.

Not a bad little stove (mentioned by another poster) but I prefer the converted Sterno variety for a number of reasons.

Not having seen one in person or for that matter after a quick search I did not find any pictures other than the box, what did you have to convert?

It seems like it's only 2 wires holding a sterno can, so you must have put a bottom to it?

When I say "conversion", I mean 'extremely minimal' conversion (you can do this at the dinner table). I simply bent down the wires that hold the sterno can so everything was flat on the bottom. I cut out some very light weight aluminum plate for the bottom (it either slides in or stays put). Some folks will simply carry some aluminum foil to lay in the bottom to keep the weight down. You can set the stove over a small campfire too...with the bottom removed, of course. :)

where might a fella pick one up?

All of our local sporting goods box stores carry the stoves. I think I paid about $7.00 for mine. Hardly worth adding postage to it if you can find one locally. :)

The Pocket Cooker is nice and a bit heavy. Campingsurvival.com has them as do a few other places.

The Sierra Zip Stove doesn't fold flat but it burns hot! Very hot.

The Bush Buddy is the lightest but the most expensive of the wood stoves.

Kifaru and Titanium Goat sell larger stoves that fold flat and include a 6' plus stove pipe for use in certain shelters. This is my next purchase I hope to have before the winter course in a couple weeks.
