Folding BK13! No, really!

When I look at any knife modification, I ask a few questions:

Does the modification make it easier to use?
Does it make it useful for a very specific task?
Does it make it safer?
Does it make it easier to carry?
Does it make it more visually appealing

I carry a stock BK13 in my left front pocket every day, in the little sheath that came with it.

You forgot, does it increase the "cool" factor. That outweighs everything else for many folks. Nice work. I'll stick to my dedicated folders though.

I did mine because it's never been done before and because I thought it'd be cool.

When I look at any knife modification, I ask a few questions:

Does the modification make it easier to use? Yes, it is now legal for me to carry.
Does it make it useful for a very specific task? Yes, carrying a folder with Becker quality.
Does it make it safer? No.
Does it make it easier to carry? Yes, it makes it legal for me.
Does it make it more visually appealing? Yes, in my opinion.

I like your creativity, nice job.

I'll stick with fixed blades......never trust half a knife.

Since when is a small fixed blade not legal to carry in Boulder? Boulder's laws from what I recall from living there a few years ago, are pretty similar to state law. All they forbid is the concealed carry of knives with blades longer than 3.5 inches. The 2.25" blade on the 13 wouldn't be illegal.

I belive that Boulder's laws are complicated. My understanding is that it is illegal to carry any fixed blade concealed. Legality is one thing--then there's the fact that I may need to use it, and a friction folder is MUCH more sheeple friendly than a fixed blade.

Finally, I did keep one BK13 stock...

Not from my read of the laws. As per chapter 5-1 of the Boulder Revised Code, ""Knife" means any dagger, dirk, knife, or stiletto with a blade over three and one-half inches in length, or any other dangerous instrument capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing, or tearing wounds, but does not include a hunting or fishing knife carried for sports use." There's no distinction between fixed or folding, and the BK13 and other knives with blade smaller than 3.5 inches do not count, legally, as knives. Thus, BRC 5-8-9 ("5-8-9 Carrying a Concealed Weapon. No person shall have a knife or firearm concealed on or about such person's body.") does not apply.

It's not complicated. Firearms law is a little more complicated, but knife law is pretty straightforward, and no different than Colorado law. Always worth actually knowing the law where you live. I don't know who gave you the false impression that there was anything complicated about Boulder law, but, aside from the usual stuff about gravity knives that I didn't include, the aforementioned is the full extent of it. In my experience, sheeple don't find a BK13 threatening in the slightest. YMMV.

Regardless, it looks good, and if you like it, that's the important thing. Just don't let a lack of knowledge of the laws get you in trouble.

Exactly. I only really like to EDC folders, and only use fixed blades for camping/buschraft.

Anyway, I won't be EDCing this one anyway, so it doesn't matter. I EDC a Benchmade sheepsfoot mini-griptillian, a Spyderco Delica, or a Kershaw Skyline.

Not really. I won't be EDCing this one. All friction folders have the long tang--it provides extra friction when the knife is open, and your palm keeps it from closing when pressure is applied to the spine.

That's cool! Looks like a peasant knife, like one of those Svords, no?

Good to know that I can't legally carry "The 9" as a boot knife next time I visit Boulder;)

Cool design.

Thanks for the resulting discussion on Boulder/Colorado knife laws.

Yes, just like one of those. I actually have a Svord Peasant that was PIF'ed by RainDog101.

I, er, wouldn't. Someone just got shot and killed by police for carrying and using two large choppers in a parking lot outside an apartment complex.
