Long time lurker, first time poster. I am interested in a folding bowie to add to my collection. I could use your input. I already have my mind set spending about the price of a Hinderer XM-18. I only have a few parameters:
No preference in locking mechanism
Between 3.5" to 4.25" blade length
Budget $300-$400

Thanks in advance

Welcome. What, to you, is the definition of a "folding bowie"? If we know that we can help you better.

So a clip point, like this Emerson

Exactly. I thought about an Emerson sheepdog, but wanted to possibly add a Hinderer XM-18 with that blade shape. Still shopping around and taking suggestions

Might as well get the Hinderer. I've handled a recent production XM24 and they are quite nice.

There's a ZT called a blue Bowie, now I believe it has its own little number code, but for the life of me I can't remember it. It probably sells for the same price(possibly even more as it is a limited run) as the Hinderer.

I do agree with what others have stated and just go with the Hinderer if that's what you're really looking for. I think Hinderer's Bowie blade looks sick as heck.

You may be able to get one of the Zero Tolerance 0392 Bowie flippers for $400.

There were two: 0392BOWIE and 0392BLUBOWIE both with 3.5" M390 steel blade, Hinderer titanium hardware, titanium frame lock and bearings flipper.

You can see them near the bottom of these two pictures.

I have wanted the ZT 0392 Blue Bowie ever since I saw it, but I sadly got into the knife game way too late. I can't find it anywhere.

Seems like the Hinderer is the way to go (since the ZT 0392 was a hinderer design)

So you want a folder with a classic clip point blade !
Well you can't even ponder this notion one bit without first considering the buck 110.
It's one of the best locking folders in existence ( when you use a folding knife what it's meant for which is just cutting stuff ) and cost under 40$ for the standard model.
If you want something fancier with a fancier Steel you can get one form the buck custom shop.

I am a big fan of the Crooked River and it has the perfect blade length. That is in my wishlist along with the buck 110 now. Thanks for the rec Hickory n steel

Sounds like the Hinderer XM-18 3.5 Bowie is what you need. They stopped making them a while back but we have some left in stock and I am sure a few other dealers do too. They start at $425 brand new from a dealer but you should be able to pick up a lightly used one for less.

If you have other questions about them shoot me an email to scott@usamadeblade.com

I second the XM-18 Bowie. I have one with battle bronze lock side and bronze hardware that I added and it's a sweet knife. I wish the detent was a little stronger but it still flips ok. I think the ZT Hinderers flip better than the Hinderer Hinderers, lol.

Whitty, I didn't know they'd quit making the Bowies!

Two that immediately come to mind are the Recon 1, from Cold Steel, as well as their Broken Skull model.
The Espada kind of reminds to that shape as well.
From Spyderco you have the Slysz Bowie and Navaja
Combative edge has the M1X
and I'd say that the brand with more bowie (with some drop point and some harpoonish curves) shaped folders is SOG, with their Kiku, Architecht, Fielder, Vulcan, Visionary and Fusion and on their higher end the FatCat, TomCat
Gerber also has the Gator and Paraframe,

Woah! I did not know Zero Tolerance had so many different models of the 0392. Some of those color combos are just too darn sexy. There's no other adjective that works, sexy is the only word that comes to mind, haha.

So far I think you have some great options, all sorts of different price ranges to boot. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
