Folding camp Pac-Ax

There are a couple of small hatchets that weigh less than a pound and a half. By their nature these mini hatchets are fairly compact to start with. I'd guess that they would work better than the Pac-Ax. Even though the Pac-Ax folds up into a very compact size, the market would be really limited. It is a neat concept though.

A few years back Gerber tried to come out with a similar folding hatchet design. The dang thing looked like Optimus Prime's leg and didn't strike me as trustworthy at all. From what I can recall it looked like there were more moving parts than on the Pac-Ax. They discontinued it before it even went into production. :p

ROLF. It literally was more than a minute before I stopped laughing. :D

It's funny that you should mention that! :D

I initiated and contributed to several extremely critical threads on the Gerber Kick Axe, in the UK and US, and emailed Gerber to ask (with tongue firmly in cheek) if they had named their new axe in honour of the long established rock band of the same (Registered/Copyrighted) name, and if they planned to sell the axes at the venues that the band played in!

It transpired that marketing guy's at Gerber had simply sat around the office and just thought up the name "Kick Axe", but had never thought to check to see if the name was actually owned by anyone else before announcing the axe to the media!

Gerber appeared to have a complete sense of humour failure when they realized that the name "Kick Axe" had been in commercial use by the rock band (I provided links to the band's website) for a gazillion years, and I was somewhat surprised by their admission as to how their marketing bod's came up with the name yet failed to carry out so much as a Google search on it.

I still have the email correspondence... And I still find them funny! :D

Even funnier when you see their band pic:

Seriously, though - not all things need to fold. And axes are one example.

I know this is a really old thread....
I just was given one of these Pac - Ax's that is in un-used condition & has the pouch. The one that gave it to me said he got it about 25 years ago. He was told they were made at a sheet metal type place in Kent Washington. Other than the info in this thread I havn't been able to find much info on it. Going by the link that showed the patent info, it shows from the late 90's, but mine is stamp'd patent pendin'.
It's a neat piece which I won't actually use, just add to the collection an keep in it's basically new state. I just always like to find out production dates & the like so I can have as much history as I can on each piece that I have. He had said he thought they sold for about $50.00 new, which apparently was too much and not many sold, so production was discontinued.
Any other info anyone has on it's history would be great.
Again.... sorry for bringing up such an old post.
