Hello all, what would you guys suggest for a 3" blade flipper style folding knife? I know CRKT makes a nice one but my buddy has that one. I noticed Boker makes one, who else makes one and what do you guy have? I just sometimes would like the flipper style while working.

If money is an issue I dont think the Kershaw Skyline can be beat in the 30-50 dollar range. You can easily get them for around 35 bucks and its a great edc. Fast and easy to deploy flipper and its very light for its size. Only issue might be the 3 1/4 inch blade which is a bit bigger than what you were looking for.

Kershaw Junk Yard Dog is a favourite of mine but then so to is the bigger Junk Yard Dog II! :)

The Zing is a really good choice. The RAM is one of my favorites. If you can find a Mini Cyclone, that is also a good choice.

The new Buck Vantage has been catching my eye. Cheap. Made in the U.S. with a good warranty, and available in S30v steel with a Bos heat treat (Buck Vantage Pro). I think there is a smaller version in the size you are looking for. Definitely worth a look.

FYI: You can remove the A/O springs from most of the kershaw line....they still have a detent to hold the blade closed.

Volt II
Clash
Oso Sweet

^^^ What they said.

Kershaw makes so many at reasonable prices and the actions are usually decent to supurb...maybe not quite as smooth as an IKBS, but darn close.
If you want to spend a bit more the Zero Tolerance line from Kershaw are outstanding...the ZT350 is a great knife.

If you want to try an assisted flipper, the Kershaw OSO Sweet is an awfully nice lil knife, and at ~$20 a real bargain.

how do you go about removing the AO springs on the kershaws? Is it pretty apparent once you take the knife apart? How is the action once the springs are gone...just like one that was designed without AO?

I love flipper designs but am actually not a huge fan of AO, which is why I really love my Skyline. I've had my AO Whirlwind open on its own sometimes when dropped, which kind of turned me off. Otherwise that's another great knife by Kershaw.

As far as what do I have that's a flipper..

It's pretty easy. Usually, the "spring" is just a heat-treated bar with the ends bent perpendicular to the rest of the spring. It is located in a recessed section of the scale under the non-locking liners. The ends are placed one in the tang of the blade (as the blade rotates it reduces/releases spring tension, which maxes around mid-way open) and one somewhere in the liner or backspacer, etc.

At Kai USA, with both the Kershaw and ZT brands, there was/is concerted focus and much effort put on and into the flipper category. We feel there is value, comfort, and fluidity with building folders that incorporate the flipper feature. I guess one could say that it is our thing, and has been for more than a decade.

Our KO designed AO's have been incredibly popular over the last decade with many designs utilizing our patented flipper. Variety has been produced as of late, as there have been additional flipper flowing AO offerings from other custom makers, some internal designs, and even a retro piece as well (Talon II). Our line-up will include a selection of AO flippers that are imported to go along with our vast collection of USA made offerings. These knives will come in many shapes and sizes, use a multitude of different steels/materials, and come in varied price points from entry level to high end. As you can see our AO flipper selection is vast and diversified.

Over the last few years you've seen our flipper offerings gravitating into manual folders. In an effort to reach out even further to the enthusiast, knives like the Lahar, Skyline, R.A.M., Zing, Volt, OD-1, 0200, etc., have been designed/produced both internally, and from from the talents of Tim Galyean, G&G Hawk, R.J. Martin, Lee Williams, and Ken Onion. In the custom world, these makers are known for their flippers, and IMO, they have all have translated well to our brands and into the production scene.

Our flipper family is on a path that can be both functional and addicting. Our focus with flippers is full speed ahead, and the 2011 new introductions will bring more new and exciting models to the market.
