I'm not much for the black-n-tactical stuff, but this pattern interests me. I've looked at Fox knives and that's about the upper limit of my price range.

Suggestions?

He said Fox Knives, their karambits hover around the $150 zone. I have heard that the Fox karambits are hit-or-miss in terms of quality, but all of their pocket clips suck. I have an Emerson Combat Karambit, and have played around with a Fox Karambit. To me, the Fox (599) was decent, but the Emerson just felt so much more solid and reliable. I've grown into an Emerson fan so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt. IMO, I'd save up a bit more for the Emerson. Spyderco has the "Karahawk" which I think isn't the greatest looking knife but being a Spydie I'm certain has great fit and finish. I think with karambits you get what you pay for.

I have the Fox karambit and hardly ever carry it. It has the Emmerson wave but I don't care for the clip. Edge retention is less than impressive IMO and you have an awkward forward pull from the pocket which works half the time depending on pocket shape.

Mtech and Zhunter make nice, cheap mid-quality folding karambits.

I bought an Mtech MX 8040, 3-4, years ago for less than 10 bucks...still gett'em for way south of 20. Very decent f&f, solid as a tank, locks up like a safe. Not a Benchmade. but I wouldn't hesitate a second using this for self defense.

If you don't have anything positive to say about a knife, don't say anything at all.

I disagree totally. If someone gets a bum knife, I want to hear everything about it. You rather go out and waste your money only to discover for yourself its a POS? Be my guest.

The Emerson Combat Karambit is well worth saving for. It's tough, simple to maintain and has great ergos. While certainly capable as a tactical tool, it can be surprisingly good at some everyday tasks. The curved blade is great for getting under cord and strapping on boxes and bundles. It's not an apple slicer but you do carry more than one knife don't you?
