Folding knife as a pry bar.

There's also the new Kershaw Barge, which has a pry bar built in.

I actually carry a separate pry bar; an Atwood Glowbar. But, my Strider SnG could be considered a sharpened pry bar. :D

Put one or both of these on your keyring and you won't ever break a knife blade again. The Sear's keychain screw driver is all of .99 cents at your local Sear's. It screws, prys, scrapes, and handles flat and phillips. The P-38 GI can opener does the same thing, and is about a buck at the surplus store. It opens cas as well as pry screw, and scrape. Isn't your knife worth .99 cents of tool to safeguard?

Im with jackknife on this one just get a keychain pry bar
I use a small Grindworx Damascus mini pry (2 1/4" long 1/2" wide and 1/8" thick) for a multitude of tasks from prying things like tacs or paint cans, using it as a chisel, using it to peel label and other such tasks, I use it as much as my knife sometimes and i barely notice its there

Yea I saw that. That's a cool Idea

I thought about buying one for my friend as an insult hahaha

He never prys with his blades

In fact 10 years ago before I knew better I broke the tip off his paring knife prying something HA!

I've never used mine as a pry bar. I carry a little gerber shard (probably their best product) on my keychain or my SAK that I use for everything between prying to scraping to screwing.
Depending on what they're doing with it, it could be considered "abuse" but I generally find most of those tasks to fall into the category of "unnecessary."

The Victorinox Soldiers knife has a locking screwdriver/can opener that is also considered usable as a prybar, though I doubt I'd want to put all my weight. The screwdriver on my Explorer has done a share of light prying including opening paint cans. It works much better than a blade and can handle a lot more pressure, though I never put my weight on it. For something as small as a pocket knife, I don't think you could pry anything to heavy just because of the size even if you could put your weight into it.

I used my DPX HEST to pry a WW2 vet out of a car he had wrecked. I had to pry the door, admittedly it was not far, but the engine was beginning to burn and he was unable to get the door open. I put it on this site and immediately had folks saying impossible, but it certainly was possible and thank God.

I don't know if you remember me, but I was one of those people who doubted your story, and I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for that. The thread was back in 2012, and sometimes I acted like a bit of a jerk back then. Every once in awhile I remember that thread and feel bad about how I acted towards you. I've mellowed quite a bit over the past few years, and I'm not that same person anymore.

Even re-reading some of my posts in this thread (from 2013), I said to myself "Damn, I could have made my point a bit more gently". I still believe everything I posted in this thread, but today I would have used a different tone.

Anyways, I just wanted to apologize to you. It was important to me that I do so.

Can i use my pry bar as a folding knife?... in a emergency I will use my knife as a pry bar, screwdriver, can opener, chisel and murder weapon...

If you have a tanto blade on a beefy knife it should be safe to pry with - if not done too forcefully, I would think. I think the Reeve Umnumzaaan or Sebenza tantos ought to be pretty safe. Just reasonable force like opening a paint can or window sill - not pushing/trying as hard as you can (to essentially test it!)

The only thing I'm likely to pry with a knife is the felt tab on a Zippo when I refill it.

I agree and even then it will likely be my Adamas! :D

In all seriousness, mis-using (abusing) a knife, especially a folding knife for unintended purposes just doesn't make sense. That said, I think some folks just use what they have on them out of laziness (to go and get the proper tool for the task at hand) or ignorance. However, and to be honest, I've used a BK2 for things other than cutting.

But not everyone is going to be able to foresee what exactly they'll be needing so that they can bring that equipment along.

Aron Ralston used a small knife incorrectly because he used it to chip away at a boulder. Maybe he knew at the time that it was the wrong tool for the job but he didn't happen to bring along a jack hammer on his hike where a boulder fell and pinned his arm and trapping him. He learned the folly of his error when he decided he should cut his arm off to free himself and live but the knife was then all blunt and probably chipped for slicing. But that's what he used to free himself and survive.

Point being, when all you have is a hammer, then you're going to tend to view all problems as nails unless you're willing to bring a jackhammer along in case your arm gets trapped by a boulder.

Every time I use my Mini Barrage to pop open a lightly frozen car door, or slice a piece of cheese with a paint scraper, or use a length of pipe to set the pushrods tube seals on my BMW, or use a hammer handle to jack up my bike for a tire change, I give a nod to Thomas Carlyle and say, "another triumph for Man, the tool-using animal".

I have a lot of tools, and like to use the right tool for a job, but I like to get the job done in any case.

But in a day and age where even carrying a knife is criticized, we, as those with a bit more sense about what knives are for, should be backing up our talk with responsible actions, like PROPER use of knives.

What is the proper use? Most of knives sold are of "tacticool" kind. We know now "The Walking Dead" is not a documentary, so that narrows it down to cutting and stabbing people. Really?

Act like an arse with your knife, and you are the reason people think knife ownership is bad. BTW, you also teach the next generation of knife owners exactly what NOT to do with a knife.
But be proud of your irresponsibility. Wear it like a badge. We all know what the badge says.

Using the knife as a universal tool is not acting like an arse.

If the knife usage would depend on people like you and what's stated in manufacturer warranties, nobody would use knives for anything but occasional apple peeling (which you really shouldn't be doing).

Gotta love the internet!

Yeah I agreed with you. I failed to see how prying with a knife which labeled as tactical hard use should be call as ass act.

Why bother with super thick blade, ultra tough steel or super thick pivot if you just plan to peel an apple or opening letter with it...

Through the years I have seen countless mechanics use folding knives as pry bars. I worked in a shop back in the early 90's and guys working there used their knife as a pry bar all the time. Same knife they used for years. So they did not break them. Most used a Buck or similar folder.

I guess you just got to know the limitations of your knife.
