Folding Knife Consulting

I was told to stay away from CRKT because they are now using inferior materials. This salesman told me to stick with Spyderco, Emerson, Benchmade, and the higher end Kershers.
Also, from what I have been reading, plenty of knife people have stated to stay away from AUS4.
This salesman also told me that Camillus was great but they were going out of business for awhile so towards the end the fit and finish was not as good.

That was a bad generalization from the salesman.

There are plenty of good knives from CRKT , just be choosy about which models ( steel and so on).

Aus4 is not the worst steel out there by any means. If nothing else it will sharpen easily but will not retain that edge near as long as say , Aus8.
Aus4 is a good , low budget steel , it has it's uses , don't let people's opinions blind you.
Spyderco is another great brand , tons of models to choose from for near every taste.
If I were you , not knowing how to sharpen , I would stay away from any and all serrations , regardless of brand.
They are PITA to sharpen , and if your EDC has serrations you are going to be cursing yourself every other few days as you try in vain to keep those serrations sharp.
I would suggest trying to learn to sharpen with a good ol' stone and oil , nothing like doing it old school and getting the satisfaction of a sharp knife.

Good hunting and post often.

My EDC before I bought my Endura 4 was a CRKT M16-13z. The only thing wrong with it was the blade steel, and it's not like I had PROBLEMS with the steel. It just didn't hold an edge as long as I liked.

For a knife I bought for $20 on Ebay, it had solid lock up and smooth opening. I really liked the look too. I just wanted something A) with better steel and B) more sheeple friendly. The Carson Flipper is awesome, but very much not sheeple friendly.

If you live somewhere where it's actually legal to carry a knife for the purposes of self defense (I don't), I'd say the M16 zytel series are really good. Edge retention isn't that important if you're only going to be sticking it in people, and otherwise I was very pleased with the knife.

(Disclaimer: I don't know jack schitt about SD, for what should probably be obvious reasons.)

thanks again for the help
please keep in mind im a newbie collector

i need serrations because of my work (boating, fishing, cutting cardboard, etc)

from all of your advice i will start collecting syderco, kershaw, benchmade, and camillus. Maybe even add in some crkts (pharoah, tighes)

So now I am taking the hint that I will have to take sharpening into routine maintenance.
Any help on sharpening will be greatly appreciated.

Im in Jersey. Is there anyone local here that would be willing to show me their collecion, talk knives, educate, and just be willing to take on a knife collecting friend?
