Folding Knife instead of small Fixed, when carrying a Large Fixed blade

I really don't like carrying a large fixed blade (7+ inches), if I don't have a smaller blade on me.
I have a combo: 3" piggyback on 7". Thought about finding a pair for another large knife (or two), but now really thinking about going with a folding knife instead of small fixed blade.

What are your thoughts about carrying a folding knife instead of 3" fixed blade, if Large (7") fixed blade is with you.

I carry a small Spyderco Cricket as a money clip and a 3.5 inch fixed blade. Both work fine with me.

effer that's what Ive been using for a while... folder and a fixed knife with a 7 inch blade.

Why a folder instead of a small fixed ?

Weight is about equal.
Fixed is stronger.
Fixed is easier to clean.

Mine are the skookum and the folder

This is an extra, not the one in the above pic but with the blades out. The little tiny one is really useful.

I see no problem with that. I usually go out with a chopper (kukri, machete, or hatchet) a medium sized fixed-blade (4" or 5") and a multi-tool or SAK.

Starting last year, I carry iether my fixed Al Mar SERE Operator, SOG Team Leader 20CV, or Rat-7 D2 and either my BM Griptillian or BM710 together. This is now my standard hunting setup and why I like the nylon sheaths with the accessory pouch. I can put the folder in the pouch with the fixed blade.

If I were to just take 2 knives and decided that I would take my Becker BK-7 + one other then I would be happy with a folder for the 2nd knife, why not?

For the 2nd knife I would be pretty happy to take a smaller fixed blade, maybe a Mora. But as an alternative a folder that would fit in a pocket would do just fine - maybe my Endura with the Scandi grind or my FFG RAT-1.

If I want to baton some wood then obviously the BK-7 is the right tool for that job - the folder wouldn't be expected to handle more than it was capable of.

I carry a Busse Team Gemini and a large Sebenza 21 as my current outdoor pair. I find that it is just so much easier to carry a folder(with a pocket clip) as a secondary. I have a North Face Recon daypack that has a nice spot on the upper chest strap where my Sebenza fits perfectly. Not only is it right at hand, but it looks cool too. :D

I've been thinking about adding a small folder to my hunting kit, to compliment my large FB. Just haven't decided which.

i usually have my sak with me but i find i still use my izzie more as a knife where as my sak is more for the tools

A good full sized stockman or trapper is a great partner to a bigger fixed blade. I have done more running with these styles than all my others. They excell at whittling and game processing, love the blade options. Good enough for grand dad- good enough for me. ;-)

The folder will work fine, but i have returned to the small fixed blade as it is faster than a folder for the majority of things. Carrying two fixed blades...or three is not a big deal when sheathed correctly, and not all screwed together.

I was thinking of the same thing this morning, packing for my day hike with my son. I always take the same type knives though. A large fixed ,like the Junglas ,BK-7 or 9; A smaller fixed like my Esee 4 , F1 , S1 , or SRK , and my EDC , which is usually a Buck Vantage. This has been my way for a long time. I always bring these three types/lengths , but vary the exact knife for each role sometimes.

My typical "blade load" is a machete, neck knife and a Mora.

Often though I will carry the machete and a folder.

Most often when I just carry a folder it will be my Brazilian Zebu.

Over the years, I have tried and carried a hundred different knives and combinations, and this is what I have settled on for some time now (read, not likely to change to anything else, any time soon):

I ALWAYS have an Emerson folder clipped on my pocket, either a CQC-10, 12, or 13...depending on what I feel like carrying that day. These are all in the 3.6 to 3.9" range. Along with this, a smallish Leatherman Original Multitool, which has a couple small blades.

Out on the trail, I will add in a Faullkniven F1, S1, or A1, depending on how "serious" the expedition is. Add in an Ontario RD Hawk/Pick, if the expedition is really serious.
