Folding Knife Kit

You guys are killing me!! Now that I know that the blade IS already sharpened...... I must.....I must... I must get a DDR knife kit.......

Maybe I should change my signature to: Will work for knives!!! LOL!

TKC, just dive right in! I'd say it's worth it just to show people the knife and tell them you built it yourself.

TikTock, your GX6 is awesome. I'm hoping mine will at least look like the "stock" model GX6 pictured on the Knife Kits site.

I ordered my GX6 kit on Friday and it was in my mail box on Monday. :)

The knife assembles pretty easy but I haven't started on the G-10 scales or drilling the pocket clip holes. All the screws are T6 except for a T8 pivot screw. Everything fits together nicely and the liner lock is pretty solid. I am buying some files and a respirator to work on the G-10. So far it is a pretty impressive kit.

I am on my 5th beginner kit and I have nothing but good to say about them.
For the money and if you have the time you cant beat the end result.

I just finished my GX6. My first kit and I must say it turned out pretty nice. I could spend some more time shaping the G-10 scales a bit more nicely but they are acceptable to me and I was getting a bit impatient. I wanted it done! :p

I didn't try anything fancy but the kit has a ton of possibilities. I can see how a more experienced person like TikTock can go all out on such a basic kit. I did put a small thumb groove in the G-10 near the thumbstud for easier opening. For the pocket clip I used the upper bolster hole as the center clip hole so I would only have to drill and tap 2 holes. The clip is nice and centered and the knife sits well in the pocket.

I built the entire knife with a hobby file set (broke one file), 1 sheet of 220 wet/dry sand paper, and a Home Depot Torx screwdriver. My father's drill press was the only power equipment I used. I was going to use his bench grinder for the G-10 but once I began filing it didn't seem necessary. I did use a lot of paper towels and a water spray bottle to keep the G-10 dust down. I wore a respirator while filing and sanding, it was a few bucks at Home Depot. If I had all my tools and equipment ready I could have finished the kit in about 4 hours. Shaping the G-10 was the most time consuming part.

I'd like to post some of my photos. Can someone help out?

What kind of tools does it take TO put together a knife kit??

I used this screw driver from Home Depot:

I bought a Hobby File Set:

I bought 2 sheets of 220 wet/dry sandpaper, used only one sheet for the project:

The files and sandpaper can also be bought at knifekits.com but I got mine from a local hobby shop.

I also got a respirator/dust mask from Home Depot for protection while sanding and filing:

I am not sure if I had the right level of protection for the respirator. I kept the G-10 wet with an old spray bottle to keep the dust down.

TikTick was kind enough to host my photos. Thank you TikTock.

Thanks justice and knife collector. If I really took my time I could get the scales to be closer to the exact size of the liner and make it perfectly flush with the bolster. I could have also made sure that they were mirror matches as far was rounded corners and such. But I was impatient and wanted my knife NOW! Still, I am very pleased with the final result. The little imperfections make it my own personal knife.

I want to make the stockman kit knife next. :D
