Hi. Chan here. Im a newbie :).

I need recommendations for a folding pocket knife for everyday carry. So something thin and light weight.

I have a Kershaw Leek, it was givin to me as a gift, but its starting to wear out a bit, and I wanted something a little different.

Sorry if this has been asked many times but I was wondering if there was a knife that fit this criteria:

-Blade LENGTH= 2-3" straight or combo edge
-Blade MATERIAL= something strong/durable
-Handle MATERIAL= plastic, titanium, whatever..
-THICKNESS= thin (less than 0.5 in thick)
-WEIGHT= light (less than 3 oz)
-pocket clip and lanyard hole is a plus
-PRICE= $1-80

Recommendations, suggestions, etc.. Thanks in advance.

-Chan

Let me be the first to suggest a Benchmade Mini-grip with a plain edge and 154cm. It's a great knife that carries very small in your pocket has a solid clip and the Axis lock is rock solid. It is super easy to open and close one handed.

It is sheeple friendly and is seems like a much more expensive knife than it really is.

Welcome to the forums, Chan.

I would recommend a Fallkniven TK4. It is light and its SGPS steel is a dream. It has a 2.5" inch blade and is only slightly more than your stated budget.

Kershaw Skyline is a perfect fit, you can even get it in Damascus.

First off, welcome to a great forum. Second off, if you stick aroud here for more than a week you'll want more than one knife.

I'd recommend a Benchmade Griptilian. grat size (mini if you want a smaller knife), grat blade shape, comfy handle, and the best lock (IMO) in the world. Right in your budget too.

Benchmade mini-grip is great. So is the benchmade 707 sequel, which is like a fancier version of the grip with a better blade shape and grind for slicing.

Also check out the spyderco stuff.

Spyderco Manix 2! Just like a Grip but with G-10 handles, better ergos, better construction, and a CBBL to boot.

Hi everybody! Glad to be part of a great forum..

I like Spyderco's but it looks, for lack of a better word, evil. And the Manix is a little on the heavy side. I will evenutally have get a Spyderco, seeing that I have a good chance at catching the knife collecting disease, but I need something a little more plain looking for everyday carry.

Fallkniven's are great, and I do want one, but I dont have money like that right now.

The BM 707 Sequel looks really good but a little expensive. However, Ive heard nothing but good things about the Axis lock. The BM mini Grip good eh? Looks like a few people recommended it. Ill look into it some more..

The Kershaw Skyline looks ok. Is the flipper opening system like the Leed's speedsafe but without the spring assist? Is 13C26 stronger than 440A SS?

I would love a Damascus blade but again, my income greatly limits my choices.. haha..

Thanks for all the suggestions.. keep em coming.

Kabar dozier, $20, aus 8 3" blade, approx 2.5oz

sypderco centofante 3, $60, vg10 3.1" blade, approx 2.5oz

cold steel voyager medium, $45, vg1 3" blade, approz 3oz

according to the 2009 kershaw catalog they now use 14C28N sandvik steel instead of 13C26. They say that it performs beter in every way.

I have a Skyline and I love it. It takes a really nice edge! -and I have almost no sharpening skills.

When in the pocket, it is hard to tell you are even carrying it, it is so light. Plus it is inexpensive.

The flipper works great, and feels very natural to engage.

As blackfeetmageet mentioned, Skylines are now made with 14C28, however I am not sure if that also applies to the Damascus version. I'm a fairly light user, but I have no problems with the steel at all.

You are correct in that it is NOT spring assisted, however the blade flies out just as fast as a Leek. It also has thumbstuds.

You should be able to find the Damascus version for about $45, only ~$10 more than the regular one.

It's really hard to convey just how thin and light it is by just looking at the specs, you should try to handle one if you can, I believe most Wal Marts carry them.

As I look and reserch, I start to want more and more knives, and the expensive ones looks really good. Fallkniven and Chris Reeve knives are so sexy; one day..

Im starting to like Spyderco's the more I see them..

I came across the Benchmade 530, which seems to fit the bill, but the blade is a tad bit too long, and its not exactly cheap cheap.

The Cold Steel Voyager (med) looks sturdy. I might have to try this one out since its only $40.

The KaBar Dozier 4062 & 4064 is attractive especially with its $20 price tag.

So another vote for the Kershaw Skyline.. and the Damascus version is only about $10 more, hmm.. very tempting.

There arent any shops with a selection of knives around here. And the WalMarts have a few Winchester & Gerber knives and multi-tools but everything else is pictures. I would love to handle anything before I buy it but specs, online pictures/vids, and opinions are all I can base my purchases on..

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I thought it would help me pick out 1 knife but now I see more knives I want. So many knives, and so little money. Ha ha.

My two suggestions:

1. Spyderco Centofante, a really nice, usable and elegant folder with good steel.

2. Mcusta MC-1 series. A very well made brand that focuses mainly on the kind of light, compact folder that you crave. Slightly over your budget, but below $90 if you shop around.

I was thinking of getting a knife "better" than the Kershaw Leek, and thats why I posted the $80 limit, but this pocket knife is going to be used daily, and I dont want to have to worry about it too much. So a $20-40 one will do.

I think Im going to go with a KaBar Dozier for now. Then probably try out the Case Sodbuster Jr and the Cold Steel Voyager or Kershaw Skyline later. And eventually a Benchmade and/or Spyderco.

One day I'll spoil myself with a Chris Reeve, Fallkniven, Mcusta and the like, but right now my income doesnt allow that.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Blade Forums is great!

Look for a Kabar Dozier 4059 D2 folder. It has aluminum handles, a D2 blade, and a very smooth action. No pocket clip, though, if that matters. You can get it for $50 shipped if you look around a bit.
