Folding pocket saw

Hi guys

I have a gerber saw , not sure of the modelname but it is the one where the blade slides out of the front of the handle, I just love it. I used it in the yard, and in the bush. never had a problem.

light, very efficent and a good value for the money.

If you actually use the saw, I would suggest you consider a slightly larger saw blade. I've never used the saw blade on my SAK. It is there to keep me company and cover the what if's.

I've always used the sawblade on my SAKs. Even if it's just cutting a 3/4" diameter limb for roasting meat/hotdogs over the fire.

It's a handy little saw. It's not going to cut firewood for the night, but if you were doing something like making a spear, it's going to cut up to a 2 inch diameter sapling, no problemo.

If you are woodworking, such as making a trigger notch for a snare, it's a fast easy way to achieve a good right angle.

Probably why I don't (yet) have a larger folding saw.

Lacourla,
If you're interested in a bigger packable saw than on a SAK, check out the Gerber sport saw, same one J. Wade mentions above I think. For cutting a lot of wood around the home, a Bahco is better and a little bigger, and the Tashiro hardware zeta saw is supposed to be the very best of the folding-style saws. But for backpacking the Gerber's 6 1/4" push-pull cutting blade is more than adequate for me, and at 3.4 oz it is the lightest saw in this size range (lighter than a SAK Trekker, ~4.8-5.0 oz). Because the blade retracts instead of folds, it's fully encased without its spine exposed along the bottom (no more sap residue or snagging inside the pack), which also makes it the most compact saw in its class -- the comfy oval-shaped handle is only 7-3/4" long and can be stowed easily in just about any space, even in a coat pocket. I now have two, picked up the first at a garage sale for $1. You can find it here for only $9.
FYI and happy holidays, Glen

Yup Storyville thats the one.

Awesome saw. $9 bucks , I think I might need another.

Thanks again guys but Skunkwerx hit the nail on the head as far as my use goes. The M1 pouch is only 5 1/2" tall so that rules out a lot of the better choices, but I think the Sak Trekker will be perfect for me in size, weight, and function.

Now that's not saying I won't pick up the Gerber for my fullsize pack though!

Yeah, the GerberSaw sounds like it's getting a lot of praise, if I get a larger saw, I'll check it out.

The SAK saws are good little saws, but the operative word is "Little".

In a full size pack, where you plan to be out for 72 hours, maybe a week, a sturdy folding saw will probably come in handy.

Thanks everyone for warning me about the small Coghlan's, I didn't realize it was such a POS until you guys clued me in. thanks.

The saws I carry are a Sierra saw, a Montana saw or a Sven saw. All have their place. The Sierra saw is my go to saw, but I mostly cut up small pieces of oak or fir for a camp fire or a Sierra Zip Stove. The Montana saw stays with me hunting and the Sven saw when I'm clearing trails or just hiking when a big camp fire is in the picture.
